Mumps

Mumps is a viral infection that causes the inflammation and swelling of the salivary glands. The salivary glands are located on either side of the face below the ears. Complications are rare but can include swelling of the testicles, hearing loss, inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), and inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord (meningitis). Symptoms of mumps include neck or ear pain, loss of appetite, tiredness, headache, fever, and severe swelling of the cheeks and jaw. Treatment options include fluids, bed rest, medication to control fever, acupressure, herbal therapy, and homoeopathy. A preventative vaccine is available.
