Shock

Shock can mean anything from a surprise to a shutdown of the body’s circulatory system that is potentially fatal. Shock may be physical or psychological. The different types of physical shock include circulatory shock, cardiogenic shock, septic shock, and anaphylactic shock. The most common symptoms of shock include a fast, weak pulse, low blood pressure, feeling faint, weak or nauseous, dizziness, cold, clammy skin, rapid and/or shallow breathing, and a blue tinge to the lips. Symptoms of anaphylactic shock include burning and swelling of lips and tongue, difficulty breathing, skin changes, anxiety, watery eyes, and nausea. Treatment options for shock include calling an ambulance, anaphylaxis treatment (such as epinephrine), elevating legs to help restore blood pressure, stopping any bleeding, loosening tight clothes, and restoring warmth using blankets.
