SPORTS NATUROPATHY & NUTRITION
I utilise a combination of naturopathic sports nutrition advice, herbal medicines and supplemental therapies to help you achieve your sporting, health & fitness goals.
Discover how excellent nutrition before, during and post exercise can help you perform better, recover more quickly and reduce the likelihood of burnout. Whether you are a professional athlete, a recreational sportsperson or someone who just wants to improve their fitness and health, supportive natural therapies can be used to enhance performance and endurance, reduce stress and fatigue, reduce the risk of injury and illness, and improve recovery and maintain well-being.
Sportspeople experience some quite specific challenges. Often pushing their bodies to extraordinary levels their requirements for nutrients and their risk of injury, fatigue, nutrient deficiencies and long term damage is increased. This is particularly the case if they over-train, under-recover and do not have a diet which covers these increased needs.
Health issues commonly experienced by athletes and which may be addressed by diet, herbal medicines and nutrient therapy:
• Injuries
• Compromised immunity
• Iron depletion and other deficiencies due to high nutrient requirements
• Fatigue/ burnout/ poor recovery
• Jet lag and illnesses associated with travelling to different climates and altitudes
• The Female Athlete Triad which is characterized by disordered eating, amenorrhoea and osteoporosis
• The need for weight control- including both weight gain and weight loss depending on the sport
• Psychological issues including performance anxiety and distress brought about as a result of the intense pressure sportspeople put on themselves and are subjected to by others.
CONSULTATIONS
What you can expect at an Initial Consultation…
Your first consultation lasts approximately 1 hour 15 mins, during which time I take a detailed case history. Included in this assessment are your current health concerns, personal health history and family history which may give an indication of your health risks. You will also be asked for information about your diet, activity levels and general lifestyle. Referrals may be made to other health practitioners where necessary and diagnostic testing may be scheduled where appropriate. Physical measurements include weight, blood pressure and bioimpedance analysis (Bodystat) if appropriate.
Depending on your requirements I may prescribe a herbal medication or practitioner only supplements. I will also provide practical dietary, exercise and/or lifestyle advice.
CONFIDENTIALITY IS ASSURED
How to book and what to bring to your Initial Consultation
Please call or email me directly on (09) 8158403 or 021 456 640 to book an appointment. Ideally your appointment would be made at least four working days in advance to allow time for a health questionnaire to be sent to you. Alternatively you can come to your appointment 15 minutes early and complete the form in our waiting area. Although the questionnaire is not essential it is extremely helpful for me to build a complete picture of your health and helpful for you in terms of getting you to think about your health and goals. Please bring your completed questionnaire to your consultation.
Please bring details of any medications or supplements that you are currently taking. Either write down the details or actually bring in the medications. Also, bring in any recent or relevant diagnostic test results/ reports. These details are important in order to avoid potential herb-drug-nutrient interactions.

THERAPIES
Herbal Medicine
Herbal medicine has been used traditionally by all cultures and societies and is still the most widely used medicine system in the world today. Modern herbal medicine integrates modern medical science and research with thousands of years of traditional use and knowledge gained through experimentation and observation. Herbal Medicines are becoming increasingly validated through clinical trials which confirm their safety and effectiveness. Not only can medicinal herbs be used to treat and prevent illness they can be used to improve health and wellness. They work to address underlying imbalance.
Cate has access to the Herbal Health Centre’s extensive liquid herbal dispensary which enables her to formulate individualised medicines suited to your condition, body type and pattern of health.
Naturopathy
Naturopathy is a way of treating illness which uses the natural healing forces present in the human body. Its emphasis is on optimising health, disease prevention and enabling individuals to make more informed choices through education. The primary basis of naturopathy is to prevent disease by helping the individual remain healthy or regain health in a natural way that causes no harm and utilises natural, gentle and effective remedies. Naturopathy is concerned with discovering and eliminating the root cause of disease (NZSN website, 2009, http://www.naturopath.org.nz/nature.html).
Registered Naturopaths in New Zealand are the Natural Healing equivalent of General Practitioners, usually having completed four to five years training. They treat a wide variety of complaints, and are qualified to prescribe Herbal Medicines, Nutritional supplements, Homoeopathics and Flower Essences. They may use a wide range of modalities including nutritional medicine, counselling and various body therapies (NZSN website, 2009, http://www.naturopath.org.nz/nature.html).
Nutritional Medicine
Let food be our medicine and medicine be our food" – Hippocrates 400BC
Nutritional medicine utilises food and individual nutrients for medicinal and therapeutic effects. Cate works first and foremost with diet. She tailors the dietary changes to suit your lifestyle, providing practical and achievable advice along with plenty of examples. Where necessary she prescribes specific nutrients. Nutrient deficiencies can contribute to the development of degenerative diseases and so it is important that any deficiencies are corrected and dietary modifications are made to prevent future deficiencies.
CATES BACKGROUND
Cate is a Medical Herbalist and Naturopath and has a passion for helping people find balance and optimal health through the use of nutritional medicine, herbal medicine, supplemental therapies and lifestyle changes.
After training and working as an architect for 10 years, Cate changed careers and while raising her two sons aged 9 and 7, retrained and graduated from the South Pacific College of Natural Therapies with a Bachelor of Health Science in Complementary Medicine and Diplomas awarded with Honours in Herbal Medicine and Naturopathy. The career change was inspired by her natural passion for health, fitness and nutrition and further encouraged by the dramatic resolution of long standing health challenges following a visit to a naturopath in her mid twenties.
Cate works first and foremost with dietary and lifestyle changes, combined with the use of medicinal herbs and supplements where required. Cates approach is one which balances traditional and natural therapies with a scientific and evidence based approach. She aims to successfully integrate the best of traditional and modern medical practices. She is also well versed in drug-herb-nutrient interactions and is a member of the NZ Association of Medical Herbalists and the NZ Society of Naturopaths.
Her approach is balanced and individualised. She acknowledges how difficult it can be to make dramatic lifestyle and dietary changes and tailors treatment programmes to the client’s individual needs and preferences, whilst acknowledging the reality of how busy life can get.
Cate is a keen recreational sportsperson enjoying netball, boxing training and running. She completed the New York Marathon in 1997 and again in 2007 so became well versed in the importance of sports nutrition, and the use of medicinal herbs and supplements to boost performance and endurance and enhance recovery. Since then she has helped numerous clients achieve their sporting, health and fitness goals.
TESTIMONIALS
I went to see Cate because I was training for an off-road half marathon and was struggling with my fitness, energy levels and general wellbeing. She was amazing and greatly exceeded my expectations. Not only did she do a health analysis but she also researched the event I was training for and presented me with a training plan, event nutrition information and race day information. I have no doubt that without her assistance I wouldn't have had the knowledge, health or fitness to complete the event. She is extremely personable and encouraging and I feel that she genuinely enjoys helping people.
Kylie Dysart, Auckland
Competing to achieve my running goals, I‘m continually looking to find that extra edge to help boost my energy levels. Recently I had tried a number of mainstream off-the-shelf products, which had failed to result in any improvements. This fostered a visit to see Cate, as an alternative way to help increase my energy levels and to recover more effectively from my daily training. From my consultations with Cate she provided excellent assessment including a number of diagnostic tests and with her clinical knowledge, she was able to recommend adjustments to my diet with additional herbal medications. These have provided me with great improvements in my overall wellbeing and performance. I recommend anyone wishing to find that extra level of performance and ways of increasing energy and recovery to see Cate immediately.

Cate Creemers from Herbal Health Centre is amazing. I first approached Cate before I was to have major surgery and then especially afterwards to help with the hormonal and emotional changes I was going through. She has worked closely with me to find a perfect balance of herbs and dietary supplements. I feel so much better and I know all I have to do is talk to her about any changes or ask if I have any questions. Cate is very patient, caring and confident and I do recommend her to everyone!
