Calm kids
Calm kids was established to provide holistic support for the growing number of children who are affected by anxiety problems, behavioural difficulties and learning disorders. Calm kids is run by Niki Mikkelsen, Clinical Medical Herbalist. Niki is a member of the New Zealand Association of Medical Herbalists (NZAMH) and member of the Natural Health Council (NHC). All children are different and Calm kids recognises and treats your child as the unique individual they are. Niki offers natural health choices to support your child by combining herbal medicine, nutrition and practical solutions to everyday life challenges. Children affected by anxiety or learning disorders often have other health conditions such as allergies, food intolerance, sleep disturbance, poor immunity, stomach and bowel upsets. Because all the systems within the body are interconnected underlying health problems in one system can cause symptoms in another. For example, an anxious child will often complain of a tummy ache, a headache or have problems going to sleep at night. Calm kids focuses on the child, not just the symptoms, and treats the underlying cause to support your child’s total wellbeing. CONSULTATIONS: A Calm kids consultation is very comprehensive, and initial consultations take approx 1 hour. Niki will assess your child’s health history, family health history, nutrition, testing and the current health concern. ANXIETY PROBLEMS Like adults, most children experience anxiety, and it is a normal part of childhood. For most children stressful events or situations will cause some anxiety, for example starting school, moving house, loss of a loved one. This is normal, and the child can usually be comforted and reassured. Anxiety is also normal in children at specific stages of their development, for example pre-schoolers may be anxious when they are separated from their mother and young children may be anxious about the dark, monsters, animals etc. LEARNING DISORDERS Does your child struggle at school? Hate reading out loud? Have difficulty with homework, essay writing or maths? Has your child been diagnosed with a learning disorder (or more than one learning disorder) or do you suspect your child has problems with learning and you aren’t sure where to get help? BEHAVIOURAL DIFFICULTIES Are you concerned about your childs behaviour? Is your child angry or aggressive? Or withdrawn and sad? If their behaviour is a problem at home and school, causing difficulties with family, preventing him or her from making friends and affecting learning and academic achievement – it is time to seek help. What’s normal and what’s not? Children can start acting out when they are feeling stressed or anxious. They may have had a death in the family, lost a good friend, moved house or changed school. Perhaps they have been bullied. Family dynamics may have changed or be difficult. Or perhaps the child is unwell, tired or run-down. Difficult behaviours during times like these are normal. Reassurance, extra love and support during stressful times is usually enough to help them feel and behave better. However, if things don’t improve and the problems continue for months or get worse it is not normal and it is time to get your child some help.
