Osteopathy is a system of health care that looks at the relationship between the body's physical structure (bones, ligaments, muscles and organs) and its impact on its physiological processes. It sees that the body's physical structure and how it functions are inextricably linked. Osteopaths diagnose mechanical imbalances within or between physical structures and use their hands to correct them. The manipulative techniques that are used, help to restore balance to the musculoskeletal system, including the blood and nervous systems that integrate the normal functions of the body. This is how Osteopathy can decrease pain and improve a person's general health. Click here for more information All our osteopaths are ACC Treatment Providers and registered with the Osteopathic Council of New Zealand. Melanie Young B.A., B.App.Sc. (Clin.Sc.), B. Osteo.Sc. Reg. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a holistic system of medicine that was first written about 2500 years ago. These scrolls are the oldest medical 'literature' known to humankind. Treatment involves the use of acupuncture, Chinese herbs, moxa therapy in which the acupuncture points are warmed, massage (acupressure) and dietary therapy. TCM views diseases as coming from many origins and having different aspects in the body and mind. The fundamental concepts are those of Yin and Yang. In health Yin and Yang are able to constantly rebalance. If there is disease in our body then there is an excess or deficiency in one or both of these. The other important concept in TCM is 'Qi' or energy. This Qi travels through specific pathways know as meridians that nourish the body, travelling along the limbs and connecting to the internal organs. Acupuncture points are areas along a channel where Qi concentrates. By needling these points, acupuncturists alter the flow of Qi in the channels and stimulate the healing potential of the body. Research into the effect of acupuncture and traditional Chinese herbs have demonstrated that acupuncture can change levels of the body's painkillers, hormones and neurotransmitters. There are many natural substances in the herbs that can act to boost organ function, detoxify, calm anxiety or promote other bodily activities depending on the herbs prescribed. All the acupuncturists working at this clinic are members of the New Zealand Registrar of Acupuncturists, and are ACC accredited. They use pre-sterilised needles, with new needles being used for each treatment. These are very fine, about the width of a hair; on insertion the patient may feel a warmth, tingling, numb or pleasant relaxing sensation. They will usually remain in place for 15 to 20 minutes. Janine Nana Nat. Dip. Acupuncture, MNZRA, ACC Treatment Provider. Janine is an experienced acupuncturist who is able to add Chinese herbs, and Tuina (massage) to treat a wide range of health problems that include fatigue, stress, immune system problems and women’s health. Homeopathy is an effective and scientific system of medicine which assists the natural tendency of your body to heal itself. It recognises the individuality of each person and that disease is expressed through physical, mental and emotional symptoms in a pattern that is essentially unique. Two hundred Years of Healing Homeopathy has been recognised as a system of medicine for over 200 Years and is now practiced throughout the World. It is based on an ancient idea developed by Dr Samuel Hahnemann during the late 1700's. The idea is expressed in Hahnemann's Law of similars which states "That which makes sick, shall heal". This means that the symptoms caused by too much of a substance are the symptoms that can also be cured with an infintisimal dose of that substance. Suryagita Cox BA, STATM, MATTSNZ Suryagita is an experienced teacher of the Alexander Technique and voice coach. She is an affiliate member of STAT (the UK Society for Teachers of the Alexander Technique) and an active member of ATTSNZ (the Alexander Technique Teacher’s Society of New Zealand). She graduated from the Brighton Alexander Training Centre, UK (an internationally recognised 3-year teacher training course) in 1996. She has studied with voice teachers in the UK and Estill Voice Training System teachers in NZ, and runs group workshops and a choir as well as giving individual voice and AT lessons at City Osteopaths. Suryagita was first drawn to the Alexander Technique after a mountaineering accident in New Zealand in 1988. Early lessons left her feeling light and pain-free and she decided to train to become an Alexander teacher which had a transforming effect on her life. Over time her back and neck pain disappeared and she felt calmer, able to release tension and manage stress. The Technique has also helped her to go about daily activities and practise meditation and yoga with more ease, and has freed her breathing, singing and speaking voice. Suryagita gives individual lessons at City Osteopaths and loves to help her clients to improve posture, relieve pain and fulfil their human potential. In a session you receive relaxing hands-on guidance in how to move well, which frees the body to heal itself of injury or restriction. She is particularly successful in helping those with RSI, chronic back and neck pain, tension or restricted breathing to find ease and balance in their body and mind. Massage
Our therapists are all Massage New Zealand Registered. We provide clinical massage therapy treatment including Sports, Pregnancy, Remedial, and Relaxation. Scroll down to learn more about us Massage therapy could be said to date back as far as the existence of humankind given touch is elemental and instinctive to us. For centuries we have been rubbing aching muscles, stroking the backs of our children to soothe them and holding each others hands. Massage is probably the oldest form of medical treatment and has been used throughout history by all cultures. The earliest written material regarding massage appears in a Chinese book dating about 2700BC in which "Stroking with the palm of the hand is advocated to alleviate the symptoms of a number of ailments. Massage, as it is practised today, improves circulation, relaxes muscles and speeds up the elimination of waste products by stimulating the lymphatic system. Massage affects both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, reducing the symptoms that cause negative sensory input and increasing positive input. It is an excellent complement to other medical treatments and a powerful means of maintaining a sense of wellbeing. Massage involves the systematic application of a variety of strokes including stroking, kneading, pressing and 'tapping' the soft tissue of the body. Remedial massage involves the use of a more extensive range of techniques including friction and transverse stroking techniques to address fibrous adhesions or adhesions between ligaments and tendons, or muscles and bones, by literally pulling the adhesive bond apart. Massage is also able to stretch localised area of tissue not easily stretched on its own. All these techniques are an effective means of breaking down what are commonly referred to as 'knots' in the body's tissue, and by doing so, free muscles to function without impediment. Massage is also hugely beneficial on physical, emotional and psychological levels, providing a calming respite from the rigours of daily life and an opportunity to explore and affirm the connection between mind, body and spirit. Remedial, Sports, Pregnancy and Relaxation Massage Deborah Harris BTSM (Bachelor of Therapeutic and Sports Massage), Registered Massage Therapist Deborah has over nine years of experience in massage therapy and now organises City Massage at City Osteopaths Healthcare. Her toolbox includes skills in relaxation and therapeutic massage, hot stone therapy, sports massage, postural assessment, neuromuscular therapy and trigger point release, myofascial release, and assisted stretching. Deborah is building her skills in dry needling (release of trigger points and muscle tension by inserting an acupuncture needle into the muscle ) She loves to treat longstanding soft tissue/muscle discomfort and pain, and finds that trigger point therapy along with education about posture and movement, diaphragmatic breath, strengthening and stretching really helps her clients. Deborah ensures that you can unwind and relax even when receiving very effective deep tissue treatments. Naturopathic medicine is derived from the healing powers of nature and is based on the belief that the human body has an innate healing ability. Naturopaths use a range of different healing modalities, such as clinical nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, Bach flowers, as well as lifestyle changes, water therapy, exercise and more, to bring the body back to optimum health and wellness. Your Naturopath will design a comprehensive treatment plan that blends the best of modern medical science and traditional natural medical approaches to not only treat disease, but to also restore you to optimal health. The practice of naturopathy is based on five key principles:
  • First do no harm – naturopathic practitioners choose treatment protocols with no toxic side-effects and will not use an intervention or treatment if there is possible risk of harm to the client.
  • Treat the whole person – practitioners believe a person’s health is affected by many factors – physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental & social. All of these are taken into consideration when your treatment plan is designed.
  • Treat the cause – Practitioners seek to identify and treat the cause of a disease or condition rather than treat the symptoms.
  • Prevention is the best cure – Practitioners teach ways of healthy living that are most likely to prevent illness
  • Physician as teacher – Practitioners consider it important to educate their patients in learning how their body uniquely responds in health and illness and what they can do to prevent ill-health.

Janice Harris BodyTalk Practitioner, First Light Flower Essences of New Zealand® Registered Practitioner; NLP Practitioner; Reiki Practitioner, Dip Psychology, Dip Org Psychology. In the mid 1990s I discovered Reiki and Touch for Health, but at that stage my life was moving in a different direction and I didn't continue energy work training. Over the last decade the fascination returned and I took the opportunity to move back into healthcare. I was introduced to BodyTalk in 2008 and immediately saw the potential of this approach to provide extra benefits to my clients. BodyTalk is an exciting opportunity to address health issues in a holistic way, and it absolutely fits my philosophy on health. I strongly believe that our bodies are capable of healing themselves, but the stresses and strains of life take their toll on our systems. It's great that BodyTalk utilises the body's own wisdom to restore any short circuits, which allows the client's body to do its own healing.

OSTEOPATHIC TESTIMONIALS "I would highly recommend City Osteopaths, they are professional, efficient and yet still always make you feel like you are the most important person they are seeing that day. I have Fibromyalgia which means there are regular issues I need to deal with on a day to day basis. City Osteopaths have helped me combat everything from a painful jaw to a shortened hamstring to putting my upper back out – even headaches. I have been given the tools to be able to deal with a lot of the body issues I get myself now. I highly recommend City Osteopaths." - AW, Wellington "My son had an accident which resulted in his front tooth being knocked forward and his top jawbone protruding through his gum. The dentist was going to cut the bone out. I went to City Osteopaths and after just one visit to Melanie, who is a cranial osteopath, the bone began to re-align into place. Within a week it was completely healed and the bone could not be seen at all. His behaviour, which had been affected badly due to headaches since the accident, also quickly came right after the treatment. I would highly recommend seeing an Osteopath to heal your ailments". - Mother of a ten year old boy, Wellington "I have been treated by Melanie since April this year following an injury to my knee which was severely limiting what I could do. The injury also compounded problems with my back and neck. I had regular treatments with Melanie and several acupuncture sessions with Janine to add support to my healing process. This is one of the real benefits of coming to an integrated healthcare provider which practices an ethos of genuine care and support to people to do their healing. So I'm healing well and hugely grateful to be moving with increasing ease and confidence". - Vicki "I have had long term back and shoulder pain. This has been totally fixed by my osteopath Sebastian in the last three weeks. A great change to my life and lifestyle. Recommend the practice (City Osteopaths) to anyone." T.Lynch "Finally, thanks to my osteopath I am pain-free after 8 months of pain and various tests and a mis-diagnosis by my GP and specialists. I was getting desperate with not knowing what was causing my pain. The GP had pretty much given up on me as he had explored all the avenues he could think of. A friend recommended that I try her osteopath, who she described as "wonderful". I was a bit sceptical but thought I had nothing to lose and no-one else seemed to have any ideas about how I could investigate further. Within a couple of appointments I was feeling the benefit of the treatment - which was non-invasive and relaxing - and the improvement has continued with each appointment so that I am now pain-free. From talking to me the osteopath quickly identified the cause of the problem and was then able to treat it. 2010 is the year I will remember as "my year of pain" but that is now just a memory, thanks to the osteopath. I would recommend an osteopath for any mysterious aches and pains you have which your GP cannot identify or treat successfully. It certainly worked for me". - J McDougall "I have been coming to City Osteopaths for many years to help with my Fibromyalgia, Myofascial Pain Syndrome and also arthritis. The techniques used for me are cranial osteopathy, balanced ligamentous tension and counterstrain of trigger points. The combination of these approaches has been very effective in reducing pain levels, treating injuries (which I am prone to) and reducing stress levels by calming the sympathetic nervous system. The osteopaths I have seen at City Osteopaths are all highly trained and skilled at their work and I have always received very good service. The osteopaths listen carefully to what I say and treat accordingly. I continue to come to City Osteopaths because it is the most effective non-invasive treatment available to me and because of their very good service". - C.H. Wellington "Lara has a lovely, calm demeanour that allowed me to relax when she was working her magic on me. I had never been to an osteopath before but thought I'd give her a go after I found a GP's advice for my sore tailbone was not helpful. Lara's handy work and exercises she gave to do at home worked wonders and she has also been very effective with treating a sharp stabbing pain near my hip. Lara helped me to understand the reason for my pain, which really eased my mind". - N. Harris "I had constant sinus issues and headaches from the earlier stages in my pregnancy which I hadn't ever had before. I also had lower back pain. After visiting Melanie twice at five months pregnant, everything cleared up and my head, back and sinus have been fine during the pregnancy since. Would recommend this practice to anyone." - L.Snowdon "Excellent work from City Osteopaths to resolve the ear pain and discomfort from a nasal fracture that was left to heal by itself after a visit to the doctor. I would recommend that everyone visits and osteopath for an annual checkup, these people can work wonders with things that you never knew needed healing." - A Google User "Since being treated by Aydan for an ongoing compressed leg injury, my lifestyle has dramatically improved – subtle methods of therapy have helped me regain my ability to function at work, and even walk properly again. Whilst my treatment is still ongoing, I have regained my confidence and feel positive moving forward. I would happily recommend City Osteopaths to anyone experiencing physical difficulty, the staff give you 110% of their time and focus, dedicated to your eventual full recovery.” - K.Wood "I have been having seeing Sebastian for the last few months, after suffering from neck, shoulder pain and stiffness and lower back stiffness and discomfort. Most of the pain and stiffness I was experiencing has disappeared and my overall posture has improved significantly. Sebastian has also recommended targeted exercises and magnesium and vitamin B all to assist with my overall recovery". M. Mallet "For months I suffered lower back pain, specially when I played the piano - I couldn't work out what was wrong with my posture, but I began to think I'd have to stop playing. When I went to Melanie with the problem, I could hardly believe it when, with just gentle touching, she somehow magicked the pain away! It wasn't even a question of it gradually getting better, it just went. Extraordinary and wonderful". - L. Cox "As an athlete, my body needs to operate at 100%. The treatment I get from Sebastian at City Osteopaths is second to none. He gets me back into shape quicker so I perform at my best. I would highly recommend Sebastian to any prospective clients wanting to get back to their best” April 2015 Feedback form
ACUPUNCTURE TESTIMONIALS "I have been treated by Janine on many occasions. Every time she has made me feel completely comfortable. Her extensive knowledge in fertility left me feeling very reassured. Janine has a very gentle, caring treatment approach and I highly recommend her to others" - Alison "I initially tried acupuncture with Janine at City Acupuncture because I had problems with poor immunity and low energy. I was always getting sick. Acupuncture has been life changing for me. I haven’t been sick or to the doctors since I started having it on a regular basis over a year ago." - Suzanne M "After a few months of stress due to my work load, I found I couldn't sleep. A friend recommended me to Sharlene for acupuncture. Her treatment helped me immediately. I enjoyed the relaxation effects of acupuncture so much, I'm now a regular. Thanks Sharlene" - Deanne "For the last two years I had suffered from a sporting injury that just would not go away, I tried anti inflammatory drugs, physiotherapy and finally surgery. Unfortunately for me none of these treatments helped relieve the pain. With my options for rehabilitation nearly exhausted, my wife suggested that I should try acupuncture. Within a matter of weeks of having my first sessions of acupuncture I was seeing improvements that I had not been able to gain from previous forms of treatment. Janine from City Acupuncture has really helped me with the rehabilitation and pain relief, and I can highly recommend her and her clinic." - Mark K “Early in my second trimester I had bad pelvic and sciatic pain. So bad I could hardly walk. After having a couple of different treatments that made no difference, I went to Janine for acupuncture. I immediately felt better and after a few sessions I’m walking freely again, no pain and enjoying my pregnancy again! Thanks so much, cannot recommend Janine enough.” "I have had treatments twice with Sharlene. She has a very caring & relaxing manner. Both times for headaches relief, acupuncture was very helpful. I would certainly go back and not hesitate to recommend her" - Sue "I went to Janine to see if she could help me to fix a “hip” injury I’d been struggling with for over a year. It had been a long process of getting treatment, then seeing a small improvement, then I’d be back to square one. "Then I went to see Janine. Janine is a wonderful listener and has a lovely, calm manner. I felt at ease immediately. She quickly identified the problem area (not the hip), and talked me through my options for treatment. I don’t notice the needles at all – there is no pain whatsoever. Over the last few weeks I’ve noticed a huge change in my mobility, and the pain has subsided significantly. At every appointment we discuss the effect of the last treatment and agree on the next one. As a “patient” it’s great to be included in the process of healing. I thoroughly recommend seeing Janine, and have mentioned her to my friends. And my osteopath is thrilled with my progress. Apart from her skill, Janine is a lovely person to deal with, and I enjoy every session. Thanks!" - Anna “Sharlene helped me with a persistent and unsightly skin condition, which cleared up completely after the second treatment. Her approach was friendly and reassuring, the treatment very relaxing, and even the needles were not at all painful. I'm extremely grateful. Thanks, Sharlene!" -Kuno van der Post, osteopath and sports coach “I was lucky enough to begin working with Sharlene in July 2012. It was a particularly difficult period in my life; I was struggling with failed IVF and the disappointment of being unable to get pregnant. Sharlene was incredibly supportive, sympathetic and helpful, and from our first appointment I felt at ease with her and looked forward to our Friday morning appointments. Sharlene is an amazing person - she has the most amazing balance of professionalism, warmth, friendliness and the best sense of humour - often I would turn up at my appointments teary and emotional, and before long I would be laughing away and leave feeling very lifted. In early 2013 my life changed completely, I found out I was pregnant, which was highly unexpected and practically medically impossible. Thanks Sharlene - Niki
ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE AND VOICE COACHING TESTIMONIALS “Lessons in the Alexander Technique with Suryagita help me to find immediate relief when my neck and shoulders are tight at work. I used to feel very tense when working for long hours, “stuck” in my body, as if my head was glued to the top of my spine. Regular lessons with Surya keep me feeling flexible. I no longer feel any pain in my back when I stand at my desk for 10 hours a day. My arms and hands don’t get so stiff, and I have learned how to bend easily at my joints so that I can stand and sit more comfortably. I can now localize where the tension is in my body, and when I relax those areas the pain is whipped away. The result is an ability to focus on my work better, which is a big help when my body is tired”. - Myriam, Wellington, 2012 "My first contact with Alexander Technique came about almost by accident, when I substituted for my wife (who was ill) at a pre-paid one day workshop held by Suryagita. It seemed like a good idea for me to go as I was suffering from a repetitive strain injury. The only help from the medical profession in respect of the RSI had been for the doctor to recommend the use of painkillers. I also suffer from lifelong asthma and an increasingly poor posture. I enjoyed the workshop and felt some immediate benefits to my posture so I started to have weekly lessons with Suryagita…. One Friday evening, two days after a lesson I felt the most extraordinary internal 'release' in my lower neck. Over the course of the evening it felt as if I was dragging my neck ever upwards from within my upper torso, where it had been sunken, and collapsed like a closed telescope for years. The overall impact was very emotional and liberating. I felt that I had been hiding inside my 6'3'' body for years, self-conscious of my height. I was now growing up to my full and natural height. I can honestly say that having Alexander Technique lessons with Suryagita has changed my body and my life around. I feel more confident, happy, my breathing is better. The RSI has almost disappeared. I had thought the RSI had been purely down to using a computer every day for about 14 years, but I now realise that this was only one of the contributory factors. A lifetime of hunching, slouching and increasing stress due to day to day living have also been to blame. My asthma has vastly improved and my posture is a million times better. And I feel good about myself and confident in my body when I move and walk. The Alexander Technique has become a central and vital part of my life, that helps me cope with all the day to day stresses and I wouldn't do without it. I would definitely recommend anyone to give it a go and to stick at it”. - Alan Buck. Brighton, UK "The best thing about Surya's Alexander Technique lessons, for me, were how it was a genuinely surprising insight into what I was doing right, and more importantly, wrong! I found her the perfect teacher to help unpick my scepticism and the voice coaching element has paid huge benefits with my performing career." - Stephen Grant. British comedian and compere "I have found my Alexander Technique lessons with Suryagita to be a nourishing learning experience. She has helped me to connect with my body in a sensitive and enthusiastic way. She has inspired me to carry on long enough that much of what I learned feels a part of me. I greatly enjoyed our voice lessons as well and many things she showed me have enriched my life.” - Mary Clark.Croydon, UK "Since having Alexander lessons I feel more confident, happy, my asthma has vastly improved and my posture is a million times better. It helps me cope with day to day stresses and I wouldn't do without it. I would definitely recommend anyone to give it a go!”- Alan Buck, Town Planner
MASSAGE TESTIMONIALS "Deborah is a skilled masseuse and a pleasure to deal with. Highly recommended!" - Jules, Wellington. "As an osteopath, I really appreciate a skilled massage therapist who knows her anatomy, has great hands and can work at varying levels for different patients. Deb is one of those treasures and I am able to refer my patients to her with complete confidence that she will cover the right areas in the right in the way to get results and yet leave the patient feeling very relaxed and balanced. I also see Deb for monthly massages to help me with my busy life. A massage with Deb makes me feel like I have had a weeks holiday in a tropical paradise!" - Melanie Young, Reg. Osteopath, Wellington M.Mallett wrote: I have been having neuromuscular massage therapy from Kerry for the last few months, after suffering from chronic neck pain and stiffness. The pain in my neck and back has decreased significantly after massage treatments. Kerry has also recommended stretching and strengthening exercises to assist with correcting my posture and my overall recovery. With all the extra advice Kerry has given me I feel I have learnt a lot about my body and can often stretch out any stiffness or pain that occurs. R.Harrison wrote: Kerry has been gradually unlocking my neck/shoulders/back and hip. It’s only through her skill and determination that we are freeing up what has been stuck and sore for ages. Would highly recommend Kerry to you - a wonderful massage therapist and a font of knowledge to help everyone. “I was referred to Josephine by my osteopath as he thought that her massage therapy would complement his treatment. He was right. From the outset, Josephine’s approach was extremely professional. She took time to understand and diagnose the issues, and her treatments have, for me, delivered very positive outcomes. Josephine obviously has a deep knowledge and is highly skilled in her area of expertise. Her genuine desire and ability to cure her clients, coupled with her calm and caring demeanour are, in my view, special. I have and will continue to recommend Josephine to others." - CW "Sarah Berry's been doing my massages for a couple of years now. I continue to book with her because of her warm and pleasant manner and I always walk out of there feeling so much better." - Alix For years I have suffered with lower back pain, only to recently discover 2 of my lower discs have started to deteriorate. Through Josephine’s guidance in revisiting my workstation set up, going from a sitting to standing desk I’ve noticed several changes, all for the better. To start with my back pain has eased considerably as I’m able to take pressure off it and actually lengthen my spine by standing. I have less shoulder and neck pain as well as no more OOS by having my equipment set at the right angles and distance. I feel more engaged in conversations with people both in person and over the phone. I’m also able to rest as and when I need to by sitting on the architect style chair suggested, but to wake myself I just stand up and immediately feel more switched on. Josephine continues to take a vested interest in my wellbeing and has been dedicated to ensuring what I had was right for me. I would highly recommend Josephine any day of the week as her passion and enthusiasm will help get you on track to feeling better every day. C O’Neill
Testimonials About City Naturopathy “We had been through two unsuccessful rounds of IVF prior to approaching Kimberly for assistance. Kimberly explored other causes for the IVF rounds not being successful and suggested changes to diet, exercise and also herbs and supplements to assist us which were beyond the assistance offered by doctors. Arguably, as a result our third round of IVF was successful and we are progressing through a healthy pregnancy. We appreciate all the help and assistance that Kimberly provided through our infertility.” - Megan, 36, Wellington “I’d been suffering from adult acne for a few years. I had also been having some uncomfortable digestive problems which had gotten particularly bad in the last six months. After seeing Kimberly, making some changes to my diet, and trying some of her other natural treatments, my skin has cleared up and my tummy is feeling so much better as well! I finally feel as though I have control over my symptoms and will know what to do if they flare up again.” - Carly, 28, Wellington
