What is hypnosis? Hypnosis is a natural state of the mind and body. A person enters the relaxed state of hypnosis many times throughout the day; when falling asleep or waking, when relaxing while concentrating on something interesting like TV or movies, are examples of naturally occurring hypnosis. Does hypnotherapy work? There is a growing range of University and medical research showing the connection between mind and body and how hypnosis works. Hypnosis is now scientifically recognised as a valuable health and therapeutic tool. As early as the l950s it was accepted by the British and American Medical Associations. What does hypnotherapy feel like? It is a very relaxing comfortable experience and a natural state of mind. It feels similar say to relaxing or day dreaming in your favourite comfortable chair. Usually the overall experience is one of great relaxation — a wonderful break from the stress and strains of everyday living. Clients often leave feeling as if they’ve had a lovely holiday experience. What is hypnotherapy? It is a very simple process. While sitting in a large comfortable chair the therapist helps a person to relax and positive words and suggestions are given while you are experiencing the state of hypnosis. Hypnosis is similar to meditation, and while both allow you to achieve similar levels of relaxation there is a difference. Meditation is about clearing the mind, letting go of thoughts and worries. With hypnotherapy the therapist works with you, giving you appropriate, positive suggestions, while using positive techniques to help achieve your goals. Why use hypnotherapy? A lot of people live normal health lives but there still maybe aspects they wish to change such as getting rid of a phobia, reducing anxiety and stress or letting go of an unwanted habit. Some may want to improve performance for exams, or have greater self-confidence. Others may want to have a more comfortable birth or manage dental nerves. Changes need to occur at the deeper level of the mind or at the subconscious level. This is where our automatic habits and responses occur. This is where hypnotherapy is a powerful therapy. How many sessions will I need? Every individual responds differently. By working out your goals with your therapist an estimated time frame can be worked out. Can hypnotherapy help children? Yes it can be very helpful. Children have wonderful imaginations which is very helpful for hypnosis. Jo Anne will work with children in a fun and friendly way using hypnosis and other creative methods, such as art therapy and imagination games. Can I learn self-hypnosis? Usually in just a few sessions a person can learn self-hypnosis techniques to achieve their goals. Follow-up sessions may be required to reinforce the benefits.
