Kimberley opened The Phoenix Clinic in 2004, after completing a Diploma in Remedial BodyWork Therapies from Lotus College of Natural Therapies. She has also completed additional Anatomy, Physiology and Immunology papers at the University of Otago as well as completing QRA Level one, QRA Level two and ongoing training with Biotrace New Zealand. Relaxation Massage A Relaxation Massage is complete body massage, using smooth, gliding strokes and classic Swedish Massage techniques. I will use light to medium pressure, depending on the client’s preference, and the intent of the session is to help the client relax. Use of long, smooth strokes, kneading and other movements focused on superficial layers of muscle using massage oil. During a relaxation massage there is less emphasis on working out serious adhesions or knots in the muscle tissue and the therapist won't push your pain limits in order to get the muscle to release. Sometimes people even fall asleep during a relaxation massage. Relaxation massage improves circulation by bringing oxygen and other nutrients to body tissues. It relieves muscle tension and pain, increases flexibility and mobility, and helps clear lactic acid and other waste, which reduces pain and stiffness in muscles and joints. There are still substantial health benefits to a relaxation massage, including calming the nervous system, promoting a sense of well-being, improving blood circulation and stimulating the body's lymphatic system, which carries away waste products. If stress, anxiety and tension are causing problems a soothing relaxation massage is the key to reducing symptoms. Deep Tissue Massage Deep Tissue Massage is a type of Massage Therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders. Some of the same strokes are used as Relaxation Massage Therapy, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain. How does Deep Tissue Massage work? When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. To do this, the massage therapist often uses direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles. Will Deep Tissue Massage hurt? Deep Tissue Massage therapy can hurt, but clients often describe it as “a good hurt”. There can be pain or aching when I apply pressure over "knots" and other areas of muscle tension. If the pressure is too strong for you, let me know and I will adjust. I will work with you, with your breath, body responses and using the perfect amount of pressure for you to get the most benefit within your own comfort range. There is usually some stiffness or pain after a deep tissue massage, but it should subside within a day or so. What conditions is Deep Tissue Massage used for? Unlike Relaxation Massage Therapy, which is used for relaxation, deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as:
  • Chronic pain
  • Limited mobility
  • Recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury)
  • Repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Postural problems
  • Ostearthritis pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Muscle tension or spasm
According to the August 2005 issue of Consumer Reports magazine, 34,000 people ranked deep tissue massage more effective in relieving osteoarthritis pain than physical therapy, exercise, prescription medications, chiropractic, acupuncture, diet, glucosamine and over-the-counter drugs. Deep tissue massage also received a top ranking for fibromyalgia pain. People often notice improved range of motion immediately after a deep tissue massage. What can I expect during my visit? I may use fingertips, knuckles, hands, elbows, and forearms during the deep tissue massage. I will encourage you to use your breath to release the tension during the treatment. It is important to drink plenty of water as you can after the massage to flush metabolic waste from the tissues. Foot Joint Mobilisation A safe surgical-free technique to amend abnormalities in the structure of the feet. This 10 minute Technique is not painful, it is not massage, reflexology or using pressure points it is encouragement of the bones to return to their original position. Foot Joint Mobilisation is correcting at the foundation to stimulate and allow the healing of the body structurally. When upright, the body is reliant on the foot for balance and stability. If any of the 28 bones in the feet are incorrectly aligned the whole body is affected. The knee can rotate inwards; this then affects the hip, which in turn affects the back, groin and stomach muscles. This abnormal stress can radiate up to the neck and shoulders as the body attempts to compensate for the incorrect alignment of the bones in the feet. Foot Joint Mobilisation is helpful for many conditions including the following:
Acupressure Acupressure is an ancient healing art that uses the fingers to press key points on the surface of the skin to stimulate the body’s natural self-curative abilitties. When these points are pressed, they release muscular tension and promote the circulation of blood and the body’s life force to aid healing. Acupuncture and acupressure use the same points , but acupuncture employs needles, while acupressure uses gentle but firm pressure of the hands. In both acupuncture and acupressure the goal is to relieve pain or discomfort by bringing the qi (or chi) into balance and letting the body heal it's self. It does this through the 12 meridians in the human body. Along the meridians are certain pressure points. These are actually the same points that the martial arts use; they just use them for a different reason. Anyway, by stimulating these pressure points the chi regains balance and the symptoms abate. Acupressure can be is helpful for many conditions including the following:
Trigger Point Therapy The style of massage I practise includes deactivation of Trigger Points and the associated release of contracted muscles (knots). Trigger points can be caused by a variety of factors, acute or chronic muscle overload, disease, stress, psychological stress, direct trauma to the area, accident trauma (such as whip-lash, or a fall), infections or health issues. Trigger points form only in muscles. They form as a local contraction in a small number of muscle fibres in a larger muscle or muscle bundle. These in turn can pull on tendons and ligaments associated with the muscle and can cause pain deep within a joint where there are no muscles. The tight muscles build up lactic acid and creates the feeling of the sore tight muscle. When trigger points are present in muscles there is often pain and weakness in the associated structures. Trigger Point therapy is helpful for many conditions including the following:

Subtle Energy Healing and Chakra Balancing Over the years that I have been treating people, I have developed a sensitivity to energy flow, blockages, fullness and emptiness with the physical and subtle bodies. With my experience of working physically with people, and also of using Reiki, Qigong and meditation, I have developed a unique style of Bodywork that incorporates both physical manipulation of the body and hands on or off energy work. As each person is an individual, each treatment is unique, but generally it will be a combination of massage of the tissues and clearing of pressure points and blockages within the body tissue, followed by the alignment of the subtle energy that exists as a part of and an extension of our physical body. The treatment initiates the awareness of your own body and energy bodies, resulting in greater harmony and health on all levels. Often you will experience a feeling of deep relaxation and peace, sometimes you may experience sensations and vibrations within and around your body. It is also possible that you may feel angry, sad, blissed, out, joyful, ungrounded, uncertain or something else. Each session will be different, just be open to what you need at the time. At the base of this work is the knowledge that each person’s energy body remembers everything about them, knows best how to heal them, and links them to their spirit and to the rest of the world. This treatment takes a little more time than a Therapeutic Massage, 75 minutes for a session. After the session please allow time to relax and giving yourself the time that you need. Don't plan to do any stenuous activity. Reiki Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results. Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery. Sound Healing I use Tibetan Bowls for sound balancing. Chakra balancing A great way to improve your health and well being is through chakra balancing. The use of essential oils is one way to achieve this balance. We use Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade doTERRA Essential Oils and like to think of it as taking vitamins for your chakras. They give your body a boost and help blocked or unbalanced chakras heal. Anyone can learn how to do this centuries old technique. What are chakras? Chakras are centers of energy located all over our body. We have seven major chakras located along our spine to the crown of the head. They are responsible for directing the flow of energy through our bodies. Our chakras may either be open or closed, depending on our mental, physical, and spiritual state at any given time. Every feeling and all of our senses are integrated with a different chakra. Each chakra is linked to a different part of the endocrine system. When we experience stress or other environmental factors, the chakras can become blocked making our bodies natural energies work too hard. Blocked chakras can manifest in physical, emotional, or spiritual issues. Keeping the chakras open and balanced keeps our energies flowing correctly and can help keep us healthy. A beautiful, uplifting experience. AromaTouch Technique doTERRA’s AromaTouch Technique is a clinical approach to applying essential oils along energy meridians and visceral contact points of the back and feet (see photo above) to help balance sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems of the body. doTERRA Essential Oils What is an essential oil? Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. If you have ever enjoyed the gift of a rose, a walk by a field of lavender, or the smell of fresh cut mint, you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. In addition to giving plants their distinctive smells, essential oils provide plants with protection against predators and disease and play a role in plant pollination. Essential oils are non water-based phytochemicals made up of volatile organic compounds. Although they are fat soluble, they do not include fatty lipids or acids found in vegetable and animal oils. Essential oils are very clean, almost crisp, to the touch and are immediately absorbed by the skin. Pure, unadulterated essential oils are translucent and range in color from crystal clear to deep blue. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have been used throughout history in many cultures for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Modern scientific study and trends towards more holistic approaches to wellness are driving a revival and new discovery of essential oil health applications. doTERRA (CPTG) Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essential oils represent the safest, purest, and most beneficial essential oils available today. They are gently and skillfully distilled from plants that have been patiently harvested at the perfect moment by experienced growers from around the world for ideal extract composition and efficacy. Experienced essential oil users will immediately recognize doTERRA's superior quality standard for naturally safe, purely effective therapeutic-grade essential oils.
