Accupuncture is a complete medical system that is used to diagnose and treat illness, pain relief, prevent disease and improve well-being. It is effective for physical, psychological and emotional problems.
Acupuncture originated in China more than 5,000 years ago and, due to its proven effectiveness, has been embraced throughout the world.
HOW ACUPUNCTURE WORKS
Recently science has determined that human beings are made up of complex bioelectric systems. This understanding has been the foundation of acupuncture practice for 5,000 years.
Energy circulated throughout the body along well-defined pathways. Points on the skin along these pathways are energetically connected to specific organs, body structures and systems. If this energy circulation is disrupted, optimum function is affected and this results in pain or illness. Acupuncture points are stimulated to balance the circulation of energy, which therefore influences the health of the entire body.
Since acupuncture promotes the body’s natural ability to heal itself, most conditions can be corrected or improved significantly. Also, acupuncture is a comprehensive system of preventive health care and health maintenance. The effectiveness of acupuncture is well-documented and extends far beyond the conception that it is only useful for chronic pain management or as an analgesic. For example, many athletes have discovered that acupuncture treatment helps them to achieve optimum performance levels. And recently, acupuncture detoxification treatments have recognized as a valid form of therapy for chemical dependency problems. Throughout its long history, acupuncture has established a solid reputation as a system of health care that works.
HOW ACUPUNCTURE FEELS
Prior to acupuncture treatment, many people do not believe that acupuncture can be painless. Different sensations such as warmth or pressure may be felt, but the energetic sensation differs from pain. Most people comment that the feeling is unfamiliar but pleasant and relaxing.
Acupuncture needles are very fine, about the size of a thick hair. They are flexible and nothing is injected through them. Over the centuries, refined needle insertion techniques have been developed which enable the skilled acupuncturist to place a needle with little or no sensation.
In some cases it is not necessary to use needles at all. For example, when treating young children, infants or sensitive adults, there are other techniques including acupressure which are equally effective. If you have a fear of needles, discuss it with me. An appropriate treatment strategy can always be agreed upon.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENTS
You can expect your first visit to last about an hour. I will begin by asking you to fill out a complete medical history form, which we will discuss in detail to determine your health history and the issues you wish to express.
This will give me an overview of your general health history, an understanding of the development of our chief complaints and will allow you to bring up any questions you may have. I will then observe your tongue and feel your pulse. These steps are part of Traditional Chinese Medical diagnosis and help me to evaluate your overall health and to determine which acupuncture points and which Chinese Herbal formulae and/or supplements might be relevant to your treatment if needed.
I'll then discuss the course of treatment I feel will benefit you most, the number and frequency of visits and the relevance of such modalities as acupuncture, Tuina massage, cupping, moxibustion, electro acupuncture, herbal prescriptions, EFT, nutrition and exercise in the overall treatment plan.
It is always difficult to determine precisely what will be needed at the beginning of a course of treatment. Typically for a chronic condition that is older than three months, a minimum of six to ten treatments might be necessary. The effects of acupuncture are cumulative and I usually expect patients to feel some improvement after three to four treatments in a chronic condition and sometimes immediately in an acute condition of recent onset.
Most people are understandably nervous about getting their first acupuncture treatment. It is important to remember that the needles are hair thin, very rarely cause bruising and are not hollow. They do not hurt like getting an injection or having blood drawn.
Many patients experience a sense of profound relaxation and well being during the treatment. Because of this, I think you will find your treatment will be a source of pleasure rather than anxiety.
We cannot possibly list everything that acupuncture helps. Please call to discuss your problem as the list is only a summary of disorders treated with acupuncture.
Some of the many conditions that we may treat include;
- Auto Immune
- Pain and Muscular Skeletal
- Pregnancy and Post natal
