The Craniosacral Therapy practitioner works with you to assist the body’s self-correcting mechanisms. In a typical craniosacral session you will lie fully clothed on a treatment couch. The treatment tends to last for about 45 to 60 minutes. Through very light touch the practitioner listens to your body’s tissues, fluid movements and patterns of experience to identify and treat a wide variety of conditions. The first thing you will probably notice is a sense of deep relaxation, which will generally last throughout the session. With subsequent treatments this release of tension often extends into everyday life. The work can address physical aches and pains, acute and chronic disease, emotional or psychological disturbances, or simply help to develop well- being, health and vitality. Because Craniosacral Therapy is effective, safe and gentle, it is suitable for people of all ages, from babies to the elderly. People with acutely painful or chronic conditions can also be treated. The pace of the treatment will be set by your body, you remain in control. How does Craniosacral Therapy work? Your body will generally heal itself without conscious thought. In today’s environment many of us are stressed and overwhelmed, which can compromise our healing abilities. Tissues contract and change the balance and integrity within the body. Sometimes tissues remain contracted and restrict the body’s functioning and vitality. The results may be both physical, such as back pain, migraines or digestive disorders and emotional, such as anxiety or depression. A trained practitioner is able to listen to the body’s intrinsic movements and rhythms and can identify and release restrictions. Often there is an emotional component attached to traumas held within the body. Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle method for releasing emotional trauma. The frozen residue of energy is discharged in a paced and controlled way. Deep healing can take place. Some History Craniosacral Therapy is based on the work of Dr William Garner Sutherland. In the early 1900’s he developed an approach to osteopathy and named it “the cranial concept.” Since then many practitioners including John Upledger and Franklyn Sills have extended and refined Craniosacral Therapy into the subtle deep healing process, which is available today. My Journey For fifteen years I have been training in the martial art of aikido, studying the coordination of body and mind. As well as being instructed on how to use my body efficiently, I was taught how to support and speed up the healing of acute injuries. Another influence that inspired me to become a craniosacral therapist was my younger daughter. She was born with a severe curvature of the spine and at the age of one, surgeons proposed to fuse her spine. However, through craniosacral therapy her spine was corrected in a non- invasive way and she is now a healthy teenager. It is important to me that this powerful therapy- form becomes more widely known and I am very excited about sharing the possibilities of Craniosacral Therapy with you.
