It is a natural medicine used to treat a wide range of conditions, both chronic and acute. It is a gentle and effective way of treating people of all ages. It is safe for babies and for pregnant women. It can be given during pregnancy and for a quick recovery after delivery. It is wonderful for treating children who enjoy the sweet tasting tablets. There are no side effects and no toxic build up of chemicals as with conventional medicine. Homeopaths look at treating everyaspect of a person's health and prescribe a remedy for the person not just the symptoms. About Amalia Fish Amalia trained for four years at the College of Classical Homeopathy, Tiverton, Devon, U.K. She then went into practice as a homeopath while taking a post-graduate training diploma with a master homeopath for a further year and then did a further year of training with a master Homeopath, Ken Metson to obtain the Advanced Diploma in Clinical Homeopathy. Amalia has practiced as a homeopath since 1992 in clinics in West and South London, Exeter, and Barnstaple, North Devon in U.K. She ran a donation children’s clinic in Exeter, providing primary health care to children of disadvantaged families on a donation basis. This was a very busy clinic, giving her valuable experience of paediatric practice. Amalia worked as a tutor and supervisor for students of the College of Contemporary Homeopathy inTaunton in the U.K. In 2004 Amalia emigrated to New Zealand with her family and currently lives and works in Nelson. She has practiced as a homeopath for 21 years. Amalia is currently registered with the New Zealand Council of Homeopaths. Starting Homeopathic Treatment Homeopathy is an effective and scientific system of healing which assists the natural tendency of the body to heal itself. It recognizes that all ill health and its symptoms are expressions of disharmony within the whole person and that it is the patient that needs treatment and not the disease. As a new patient these ideas may be very new to you, but Homeopathy has been established for over 200 years. How does it work? Homeopathic remedies work by stimulating the body’s own healing power. This stimulus will assist your own system to clear itself of any expressions of imbalance. The aim is to get you to a level of health so that eventually you will need infrequent treatment. What will your Homeopath need to know? In order to find the right remedy for you as an individual, your homeopath will need to know all about you. A detailed understanding of who you are, along with any complaints and details of how you experience them, is needed to assess your case correctly. So anything you can tell your homeopath that is typical of who you are will help this process. Finding out about your general energy level, your past medical history and the way you live are also important. Anything you say will be treated in the strictest confidence. The initial consultation may last an hour and a half and follow ups will be up to an hour. What will treatment be like? Your homeopath will give you a homeopathic remedy, usually in the form of tablets occasionally as powders, which should be allowed to dissolve in your mouth; or you may be given liquid medicine with instructions. Nothing else should be put in your mouth for 10 minutes before or after taking your remedy. What will happen once treatment starts? After taking your remedy you may notice some changes. Some patients experience a period of exceptional well being and optimism. Sometimes your symptoms can appear to get worse for a short time. This is a good sign that the remedy is taking effect. Sometimes a cold, rash or some form of discharge occurs. This is a good sign that healing is occurring at a deep level. Symptoms may appear as a form of "spring cleaning" effect which means that your system is going through a cleansing stage. Similarly, old symptoms can appear, usually for a short period. These symptoms will pass and are an important part of the healing process. How do I prepare for treatment? In order for remedies to work to their fullest capacity it is important that you do not take substances that will reverse or antidote the remedies. These include coffee (even decaffeinated coffee), peppermint or menthol in any form, in sweets, toothpaste etc. It is a good idea to buy a non-minted toothpaste before treatment begins and to start to cut out coffee. Other substances to avoid while having treatment (i.e. until treatment has been completed) are camphor, eucalyptus and aromatherapy oils, pungent substances such as Olbas Oil. Coca Cola or other Colas contain the same inner husk of the coffee bean and will also reverse the actions of the remedies.
