What is the Feldenkrais Method?
The Feldenkrais® Method improves your everyday functioning by increasing your awareness of your body habits. This awareness creates the conditions for changing these habits to better serve you in daily activities – from brushing your teeth, to gardening or playing sports. For example you may come to a class or to an individual lesson with a specific difficulty such as a troublesome shoulder or hip, or lower back pain. Your learning in the method is available in two forms:
  • Group Lessons — Awareness Through Movement® (ATM)
  • Individual lessons — Functional Integration® (FI)
Group Lessons — Awareness Through Movement®
These classes provide students with an opportunity to explore the way in which they move to increase awareness of habitual patterns. The lessons are usually performed slowly at the beginning in order to facilitate learning via the motor-sensory cortex of the brain. They are usually carried out with the student lying on the floor. These are optimal conditions for efficient learning to take place. Lying on the floor reduces stress on the nervous system and provides sensory information about the student’s patterns of standing, sitting, walking and any other work or recreational activities. When done with care and attention the student experiences relief of unnecessary effort (reducing muscle tension) and pleasure in movement.
  • Tuesdays 11 AM -12 noon, St John’s Hall cnr Karori Road & Campbell St, Karori, Wellington;
  • Wednesdays 6-7 PM, and and 7:15-8:15 PM St Ninian’s Church Lounge cnr Karori Road & Newcombe Crescent, Karori, Wellington
Fees: $100.00 per term (8 lessons) Casual $15.00 per lesson Individual lessons — Functional Integration® (FI)
These lessons are carried out on a one-to-one basis. The practitioner moves the client in order to discover existing habitual patterns and to explore options for more efficient movement and overall functioning. At the end of a session the client normally experiences a new and satisfying integrated sense of self at rest and in action. Lessons are most often done on a specifically designed table but can also be done in sitting and standing positions. Both of these forms of learning (ATM and FI) occur through the nervous system. They release muscular tension throughout the body and awaken under-used muscles and parts of us that can contribute to more efficient and effective daily functioning.
