SERVICES

Welcome to North Harbour Living Without Violence North Harbour Living Without Violence Collective Incorporated is a community organisation based in Takapuna, Auckland, New Zealand. Our main purposes are to intervene in and stop men's violence against women, children and other men, to support and empower women and to promote their safety from men's violence. The Collective comprises a group of men and women trained in a range of disciplines, including counselling, psychotherapy, social work, teaching and group facilitation, as well as specific training in the dynamics of family violence. North Harbour Living Without Violence Collective Incorporated started out in 1992 as a group of men and women committed to reducing family violence in our community and became an incorporated society in 1994. The Collective is affiliated to the North Harbour Family Violence Prevention Project, the Network of Women's Support Agencies (Auckland) and Te Kupenga Whakaoti Mahi Patunga / National Network of Stopping Violence Services (NZ) Inc. We have a strong belief that intervention work to reduce and/or stop family violence is best carried out within a co-ordinated community approach. In this we are supported by the key survivor agencies on the North Shore Services: Our intervention strategy is based on the delivery of three key services, namely:
  • Provision of Mens Living Without Violence Programmes.
  • Provision of Women's Support / Education Programmes.
  • Provision of Teenage and Children's Programmes. For more details of these programmes, please click on the link provided, or read the summaries below... Summary of Programmes and Funding: Men's Living Without Violence programmes: The Men's Living Without Violence group programme is an 18-week open group programme, available two nights of the week. Each group is preceded by an intake interview for potential participants. All groups have two trained facilitators, either two men, or one man and one woman. Funding from , CYF and Lottery Welfare help support self-referred men to attend these programmes. The Department for Courts and Community Probation pays a fee for service for the men they direct to attend programmes. Currently about half the men in each group are self-referred. Women's Support/Education programmes: Each Woman's Support/Education group is a 12-week closed group programme facilitated by two women trained in family violence issues. Some individual pre-group sessions are available for women. Programmes are run both in the day and during the evening, with crèche facilities available for women attending the day group. We may also be able to help with childcare and transport costs. The cost to women for these programmes is kept low and is negotiable. Inability to pay never precludes participation in these groups. We receive financial support from, CYF, Lottery Welfare and Community Education to help pay for self-referred women to attend these groups. In addition, the Family Court pays for the programmes of women who have taken out a Protection Order. Currently, about 50% of women in our programmes have taken out Protection Orders. Programmes for Teenagers and Children: We currently offer individual and group programmes for teenagers and children witnesses of family violence. Individual programmes are available for those children and teenagers who have been referred to us from the Family Court and for whom a group programme is not suitable, while group programmes are available to children and teenagers whose main caregiver has completed a Living Without Violence programme. Both the teenage and children's programmes are divided into suitable age ranges, and combine together boys and girls. We are currently developing a group programme for teenage perpetrators of family violence. We currently offer individual programmes to teenage perpetrators of family violence. Personnel: North Harbour Living Without Violence Collective Incorporated currently employs the equivalent of three 20-hour staff, all of whom work in a co-ordination function. In addition, approximately twenty facilitators and four supervisors are contracted to provide services. Structure of the Collective: All co-ordinators and facilitators are members of the Collective, which functions as our policy-making body. The Collective meets monthly for peer supervision, policy and programme review, and training. The management committee's task is to oversee the carrying out of the decisions made by the Collective. The committee, consisting of the staff, two men and two women, meets monthly (or more often when required) and is accountable to the Collective. It ensures all policy and financial decisions are carried out and oversees the work of the co-ordinators. Co-ordinators report to the management committee.
