SERVICES
Welcome to Stillwater Homeopathic and Well Being Centre Stillwater Homeopathic and Well Being Centre is a clinic based in Ellerslie, Auckland, founded by Sue Spurling to provide a peaceful, healing environment in which you can re-gain a sense of health and well being. We are all aware of the stresses encountered in our daily lives, which, if allowed to continue can make us ill. Although conventional medicine can help relieve the symptoms of many common ailments and chronic diseases, it may not change the reason for our becoming ill, so we are likely to become ill again. Healing therapies available: Classical Homeopathic medicine Energy healing, based on Reiki principles Aromatherapy/ therapeutic massage for adults and babies Relaxation and Guided imagery. Workshops I also run short courses, workshops and specifically tailored workshops according to requirements (see below for further information). Mind-body Medicine Including Nutritional Medicine, is growing in academic respectability around the world, yet it has its roots in ancient times. Increasingly studies are demonstrating the effectiveness of many traditional forms of healing. That knowledge and wisdom of how our physical health reflects our inner state is slowly becoming more widely recognised in mainstream medicine. It is also becoming more widely recognised that we are so much more than our physical structure, which is why Energy Medicine practices are being sought and incorporated into our daily lives by members of the public. It is the basis of how we start to heal and maintain wellness. It is the focus of the Stillwater Centre. To arrange a consultation please contact Sue on phone: 021 263 2859 About Sue Spurling MA RN DipHom RCST TIDHA Classical Homeopath, Holistic Therapist & Teacher I came to New Zealand from the UK 6 years ago and am now an NZ citizen. I have been exploring and teaching Mind Body Medicine approaches to health and healing for the past 25 years, in both conventional medical settings (in hospitals, community and hospices) and complementary health clinics. I have taken formal study to Masters Level (Therapeutic Bodywork at the University of Westminster, London). I studied aromatherapy for two years in London with Robert Tisserand and later advanced aromatherapy. Following that I studied craniosacral therapy at the Karuna Institute in London . Over that time I developed my Reiki practice, going on to study for my Reiki Master level here in New Zealand. Since I arrived in this country I have also completed a four-year Diploma in Classical Homeopathy and am currently an Intern with the New Zealand Council of Homeopaths, working towards my registration in homeopathy. My understanding of the great wisdom we hold within us has deepened. If we choose to connect with that wisdom we can release old patterns and beliefs that “hold us in our story”. We can find freedom to live our lives in a more joyful state. I have spent a large part of my nursing practise working with the newborn, children and their families, and also with people with acute and chronic health problems of all kinds, to help people achieve results that they didn’t believe were possible. Through my personal, family and professional work I have seen the amazing abilities of the body to heal itself if given the opportunity. I am increasingly working in creative ways to incorporate into my practice the knowledge gained so that I can offer you an opportunity to see what your body-mind can achieve! I work in three centres - Ellerslie, at Stillwater Centre, Tel: 021 - 263 - 2859 The Bay of Plenty College of Homeopathy, New North Road, Mt Albert. Tel: (09) 849 - 4436 and also at the Homeopathic Dispensary, 66, Michael’s Avenue, Ellerslie, Tel: (09) 571 – 0161. More About The Therapies HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE Homeopathy is a safe and effective system of energy medicine, which is based on treating the individual with highly diluted substances given in liquid drops or tablet form, which trigger the body’s natural system of healing. A homeopath will match the most appropriate medicine to the patient. A remedy is selected according to the unique qualities, personality, likes and dislikes of an individual, and aims to treat the causes not just the symptoms. It works on the principle of “like cures like” - that is, a substance that would cause symptoms in a healthy person is used to cure those same symptoms in illness. For example, one remedy, which might be used in a person suffering from insomnia is coffea, a remedy made from coffee. Scientifically it can not yet be explained precisely how it works, but new theories in quantum physics are going some way towards shedding light on the process. What we do know is that a carefully selected homeopathic remedy acts as a trigger to the body’s healing processes. Homeopathy has been used in the UK for over two hundred years, but has an honourable tradition dating back to ancient Greece. It was Dr Samuel Hahnemann, a brilliant doctor working in 1796 in Germany, who developed the scientific and philosophical foundations of this gentler way of healing. His scientific principles form the basis of successful homeopathic practice today. Homeopathic remedies are a unique, potentised energy medicine, drawn from the plant, mineral and animal worlds. They are diluted to such a degree that not one molecule of the original substance can be detected beyond the 12c potency. They work by gently boosting the natural energy of the body, and are very safe, even for pregnant and sensitive patients. There is no danger of addiction or toxicity. Homeopathy can be used to treat most conditions, from acute fevers, childhood conditions, behavioural disturbances, allergies, bites, stings, to chronic health problems, such as arthritis, respiratory problems, and more serious complaints – in adults, children, babies and animals. Examples: * First Aid situations - burns, stings, bites, sprains, sore throats, upset tummies * Infant & childhood diseases * Behavioural problems * Women’s health care, pregnancy and childbirth * Pre and postnatal care * Men’s health Care * Chronic illness * Allergies, asthma, respiratory problems * Digestive problems * Migraines * Infertility * Serious health problems * Anxiety & stress-related problems * Insomnia AROMATHERAPY "Aromatherapy is a caring, hands-on therapy which seeks to induce relaxation, to increase energy, to reduce the effects of stress and to restore lost balance to mind, body and soul." Robert Tisserand It is the skilled use of concentrated aromatic or essential oils (EO’s), extracted from botanical sources, such as leaves, flowers, bark, berries and roots, for therapeutic effects on the mind, body, spirit. They can be applied in various ways including massage, inhalation, creams, lotions and baths. Essential oils can be used to help in many conditions such as: * Stress-related conditions * Pain * Migraines * Anxiety * Sleeping problems * Constipation * Skin problems and burns * Infections ….. and more Because essential oils are concentrated they must be diluted in a carrier or base oil or cream/lotion before being applied to the skin. And some essential oils are unsuitable to be used under certain conditions, such as pregnancy, with children, with the elderly. It is therefore important to know how and when to use essential oils safely. Extensive therapeutic use of essential oils is recorded in ancient China and India and much of the Middle East. Roman soldiers on campaign had their wounds treated with honey and myrrh. Terra Cotta distillers have recently been found in archaeological digs, but widespread use of distilled essential oils from Europe began after the invention of glass distillation mechanisms in the 16th century and this opened the door to extracting the volatile components from Chamomile, Lavender and Rosemary and other plants found mainly in the northern regions. The term "aromatherapie" was coined by Rene Maurice Gattefosse in 1928. He utilized the word to imply the therapeutic use of aromatic substances (essential oils). The carrier oils, in which essential oils are diluted are also of great therapeutic value and help carry the EO’s into the body at varying rates of uptake. They also have their own therapeutic and nourishing properties. THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE This healing art involves the use of touch with or without the use of oils, usually using hands (although elbows, feet and knees can be used), to bring about changes in soft tissues, circulation and to promote a range of effects, such as reduction in anxiety, relief of muscle tension, warmth, pain relief, and can promote a sense of wellbeing and peace. Massage is probably one of the oldest therapies known to man. The beneficial effects of massage are well recognised and researched and wonderful to receive. RELAXATION & GUIDED IMAGERY Imagery is the most fundamental language we have. Everything you do, the mind processes through images. When we recall events from our past or childhood, we think of pictures, images, sounds, pain, etc. It is hardly ever be through words.. Your thoughts have a direct influence on the way you feel and behave. If you tend to dwell on sad or negative thoughts, you most likely are not a very happy person. Likewise, if you think that your job is enough to give you a headache, you probably will come home with throbbing temples each day. This is just another clear example of the power the mind exerts over the body. If you can learn to direct and control the images in your head, you can help your body heal itself. If you learn to use your imagination in a way that is purposeful and directed, it can be a tremendously powerful vehicle to get you where you want to go, including to better health. Imagery had been found to be very effective for the treatment of stress. Imagery is at the centre of relaxation techniques designed to release brain chemicals that act as your body's natural brain tranquilizers, lowering blood pressure, heart rate, and anxiety levels. There are different methods that can be used which can be used as a means of handling difficult situations more easily. A couple of examples where it has proved of wonderful benefit: A lady came to see me some years ago with shoulder pain. Through guided imagery she helped to resolve some grief issues around her relationship with her father. Her pain went after the first session. A pregnant lady came to see me with anxiety around her forthcoming birth. Through guided visualisation, she connected very deeply with her baby in a new way and walked out smiling. She phoned about 3 weeks later and sounded very light and happy and full of excited anticipation. ENERGY HEALING (using Reiki principles) Reiki (pronounced Ray Key) is a combination of two Japanese words REI and KI meaning Universal Life Energy.. It evolved from teachings, introduced into Japan in the 19th century by the Sensei Mikao Usui. There are many stories about who he was, including the possibility of him being a Buddhist monk. His words as quoted from his original Handbook, state; “My Usui Reiki Ryoho is an original system of healing; there is nothing like it this in the world. It is an original method based on Intuitive power in the universe. It always seems to go where needed or flow in response to the need or demand of the recipient. By this power, the body gets healthy and enhances happiness of life and peaceful mind.” Reiki complements all other medical and healthcare treatments. It is of growing interest to many chiropractors, doctors, psychologists and others. It is already being used in hospitals in America, United Kingdom and Australia. Reiki is known to speed up the healing process and can minimize the side effects of conventional medical treatment. A Reiki treatment feels like a ray of warm and gentle sunshine flowing through and around you, bringing comfort to your ‘whole self.’ It will treat the body, mind and spirit as a whole. Reiki is powerful, yet wonderfully gentle and nurturing. During a treatment, the recipient remains fully clothed. Reiki is especially helpful when dealing with all stress related disorders. Just for today: Do not be angry Do not worry Be grateful Work with integrity Be kind to others.
