Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is the inability to hold urine in the bladder. There are several different types of urinary incontinence including stress incontinence, urge incontinence, functional incontinence, overflow incontinence, mixed incontinence (a combination of urge and stress), and transient incontinence. It can be caused by pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, neurologic injury, birth defects, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and age-related physical problems. Treatment options include exercises to strengthen the area, electrical stimulation, biofeedback, timed voiding, bladder training, medication, implants, surgery, catheterization, and herbal therapies.
