Time line therapy is an offshoot of Neuro Linguistic Programming and Ericksonian Hypnosis. It was developed by Tad James in 1985. Time line therapy helps us to make sense out of our temporal experiences, as well as change our understanding of how negative emotions and limiting decisions affect us, and also describes how to create a meaningful future. Read on to find out what it can do for you.

The Importance of the Unconscious Mind

The purpose of the unconscious mind is to store memories and organise memories. It is also the domain of the emotions. All emotions are generated by, maintained by, and are the responsibility of the unconscious mind. The unconscious mind also represses memories with unresolved negative emotions. That is, the negative emotion will remain intact until the issue that caused the emotion is resolved. But as well as repressing these memories, the unconscious mind presents the repressed memories in order to release negative emotions. Also, the unconscious mind keeps repressed emotions repressed for protection, it runs the body, preserves the body, and it enforces morality that it believes to be true. It takes direction, follows orders, controls and maintains perceptions, generates stores, distributes and transmits energy, responds with instinct and habit, need repetition-building habits, continually seeks out more and more, functions optimally with a minimum of parts, is meant to be symbolic, and works on the principle of least effort.

The Time Line and why it’s needed

Your time line is how the unconscious mind encodes and stores your memories. It is a largely unconscious process and your may be more or less aware of it from time to time. Time line therapy techniques give us a way to resolve significant events in a person’s past. We can also release the negative emotions in memories quickly and easily. The release of these emotions then has an effect on the person’s behaviour. Time line therapy also allows us to re-evaluate the past and change any decision that limits us. Whether conscious or unconscious, these decisions affect our behaviour in the present. Creating the future is the last step, and you can actually create your future the way you want it.

Time Line Therapy Techniques

Time line therapy teaches you a collection of techniques that allow you to gain emotional control over your life. Inappropriate emotional reactions such as outbursts of anger, periods of apathy, depression, sadness, anxiety, and chronic fear, are stopping us from getting the lives that we want. Limiting decisions are those such as “I’m not good enough” or “I’m not smart enough” or “I don’t deserve this” create limitations that don’t really exist and actually stop you from creating reaching and attainable goals and outcomes. Using time line therapy allows you to eliminate many issues that caused the limiting decisions in your past and thus allows you to move forward.
