Thought Field Therapy (TFT) was developed over 40 years ago by Dr Roger Callahan PhD, a pioneer of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. Put simply, TFT is a drug free and non-invasive treatment that is designed to eliminate the cause of negative emotions.

What Is Thought Field Therapy?

When a person experiences limiting thoughts, fears, or negative or upsetting emotions, an individual “thought field” is created. The problems that a person experiences are caused by disturbances in this thought field, disturbances that Dr Callahan has called “perturbations”. These perturbations are essentially disturbances in our energy systems or meridians, and these disturbances need to be corrected.

TFT is a meridian therapy and works by tapping specific meridian points on the body in a certain sequence. When these points are tapped in the correct order for a patient’s specific disorder, the patient notices a rapid and dramatic improvement in the way that they feel. Usually, the patient is no longer troubled by their disorder.

TFT combines elements of acupuncture, Chinese medicine, applied Kinesiology, Cognitive Therapy and psychoanalysis.

Conditions Treated

Conditions that can be treated using TFT include:

  • anxiety disorders
  • phobias
  • traumatic events
  • post traumatic stress disorder
  • addictions
  • emotions such as anger, jealousy, guilt and fear
  • a loss such as a death

TFT can also be used for the treatment of physical conditions such as headaches and back pain.

The Treatment Process

A typical treatment may go as following: the patient will think about their problem before rating the severity of the problem on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being minor and 10 being the most severely affected. The practitioner will then ask the patient to tap certain areas on their body in a precise sequence. Once this has been completed, the patient is then asked to think about their problem again, as negatively as they can. Usually, the patient is unable to recreate the negative emotions they had before undergoing the treatment.

When undergoing TFT, a person is not required to discuss their problems with the practitioner so they do not experience the distress or embarrassment that can often be associated with other psychotherapies. They merely think about the problem in their own minds during the treatment process.

A patient may treat themselves by using a “treatment algorithm” which carries a success rate of around 80%, but visiting a practitioner means that the treatment procedure can be tailored directly to the patient and this ups the success rate to as high as 95%.

A successful TFT treatment can rebalance a person’s autonomic nervous system.
