About The Alexander Technique The Alexander Technique is very different in nature to other 'therapies' as it is about learning to do things in a different way. It is about not following our habits but having conscious input into how we use our body. We find it hard to even see our own postural faults. We are so used to seeing ourselves in the way that we have always been, and it is not until a slight change in balance is made or our attention is brought to how we can do things in a less stressful way, that we can begin to see our potential. We can immediately feel the tightness and pain lessen and as we begin to use less energy for the little things we will have more energy in reserves, for the big things. This is the very reason why so many performers have found the Technique invaluable. Dancers, actors, sportspeople and musicians all have high energy jobs and when attention is paid to the technique they use, then less energy goes into using unnecessary muscle contraction, and more energy is in reserve for their entire performance. The Alexander Technique can transform the average performer into the very good and the very good into winners. So the Alexander Technique is about thinking the right thing not doing it. When we have learned this lesson then the right thing will do itself. Confusing I know. But we all know how powerful our minds are. If you have ever tried to sit with no thoughts for even a minute, you would have found it extremely difficult at first. But we can use our powerful minds to think ourselves into new postural habits. In this way we can gradually change back into good postural habits in the same way that we gradually changed into bad postural habits. The body does not respond well to sudden change and quickly goes back to what it is use to, its habits.
The Role of a Teacher The job of a teacher in this process is to identify where the problems are coming from and to help the student to recognise good body balance again. We are so use to seeing ourselves as we are, that we fail to recognise unbalance in ourselves anymore, but when these things are shown to us we can usually see and feel them. In a one on one lesson, which is between 45 minutes and 1 hour, a teacher will help you to move to a new and easier way of standing, sitting, walking and all other day to day activities. An Alexander Technique Teacher is trained in the art of observation, and no imbalance in the body will go unnoticed. Working together as teacher and student, great things can be achieved. Now is the time to improve your physical outlook for the rest of your life. No matter what age you are now, you can have the poise of youth.
About Shona Brady I have been teaching the Alexander Technique for eleven years and have worked with many students in that time. My special love is working with athletes as the potential for increased performance is vast. I have worked for a number of years with ultra-marathon and marathon runners, but the principles that apply to athletes apply to everyone. I found the Alexander Technique when I was given a book to read called The Strategies of Champions. In this book many well known champion athletes talked about what they had done to excel in their sport. The one chapter that stuck in my mind was the chapter on the Alexander Technique as I had never heard of it. As things often happen, the very next week I saw a workshop advertised for the technique by visiting teacher, and intrigued, I enrolled. I was astonished at the simplicity and ease of the technique and instantly fell in love. I continued to have private lessons and eventually decided to train as a teacher of the Alexander Technique. I have never looked back. "If there is no poise, there can be no successful outer movement, for poise is unseen power." -Sri Chinmoy
