SERVICES
The Jivana Yoga Health Retreat was founded by Sandie Matthews in February 2000. This unique ORGANIC B&B on the West Coast supports full therapeutic health programs.
Health Programs Here at the Jivana Reatreat we offer a variety of health programs which are suited to your individual needs and requirements. Iridology Iridology is a powerful tool, used to gain deeper understanding of a person's past, present and future health. The iris and the sclera can show acute, sub-acute, chronic and destructive stages in the brain and body. The iridoligist can determine the inherent structure and the working capacity of an organ or gland. Pressure symptoms, which may be of a mechanical nature such as prolapsus (of an organ) or ptosis (of a muscle or organ) can also be determined. Iridology can be used with any other form of analysis and diagnosis in helping a patient to better understand their state of health. Yoga The Sanskrit word 'Yoga' actually means 'alignment of mind, body, emotions, and spirit.' In western terms, it is coordinated stretching and breathing exercise. Yoga is really a heap of things, many of which are feelings of well being that can't be talked or written about - but can be experienced! Yoga is injury and pain prevention - It provides a counter stretching mechanism to keep all muscles tendons toned, stretched, and balanced evenly, preventing injury and discomfort, and providing relief to existing conditions. Yoga is stress control - yoga breathing techniques have proven to reduce stress considerably. Yoga is healing - yoga exercises help the bodies ability to deliver blood, which contains oxygen and healing nutrients, to troubled tissue areas. Yoga is self discipline - taking responsibility for our own health, and our state of well being. It is an attitude that we are not victims of circumstance, that we do have a say in the course of our lives through applying our self discipline. Yoga is a way of thinking - yoga is a way of feeling good, a way of taking control of our physiological, emotional, and spiritual needs. Yoga is everyday life for every one, and every age. Naturopathy Personal health programs and group sessions are ongoing at the Jivana Retreat. 'Inflammation is a reconstructive process and should not be suppressed. Every acute disease is a result of cleansing and healing effort of nature.' - Henry Lindhahr A healthy person is whole in mind, body, emotion, and spirit, enjoying a state of harmony and inner peace with self and the universe around them. Since beginning my practice of Natural Preventative Health Care in the 1970s, I have never yet seen a completely healthy person. Each of us has a personal duty to be well, as individual wellness forms the collective consciousness of the planet. We are, however, here on our own personal journey to embrace that God given right. Through conscious awareness we become well. Wellness is something we all would be wise to strive for in our lives. When we have complete wellness we have the ability to move unrestricted in any direction we choose in life. Choose a qualified natural health practitioner who has the ability to help you on your journey to wellness. Follow through with wise advise on steps to improve wellness. Patience and perseverance wins through. Your blood changes every 6 weeks, your cells every 4 months, your bones every 7 years. This means, given the right circumstances, dietary principles, environment, lifestyle etc, you can grow a completely new you. Why not improve on the old model. We can change and improve our automobile, why not ourselves? What we focus on in our lives we will attract to us. Embrace the principles of healing and enjoy an improved state of wellbeing physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Medical Herbs Historically, the use of plants, weeds, herbs, goes back over 40,000 years. The Egyptians, and Romans used herbs for stamina, and improved performance in their armies. World wide there is a fast growing awareness of their benefits with over 75% of the world population using medicinal herbs. Plants do four things:
    Activate, Cleanse, Build, Balance.
Many of the foods we eat regularly are herbal medicines, such as garlic, which is commonly used as an anti-biotic for its blood thinning properties. Garlic is also used for flu, to ward off colds, some parasitic problems, and is also helpful for lung, bronchial, and blood pressure problems. Properly chosen herbs are in harmony with human beings. Herbs are our allies and most suited to our complete wellness. We tap into our higher conscious wisdom when we use herbs for our healing. Just observe an animal when it is out of sorts, it goes to grasses and plants to help it return to balance and wellness. Therapuetic Massage and Body Work Massage is manipulation of the soft tissue of the body (skin, underlying fatty tissue, muscles, connective tissues, and tendons.) Effects on the body through massage depend on the technique being used, the physical condition of the person being massaged, and the purpose for giving the massage. Generally the aim of massage si first to soothe, relax and help the body release tension. Toning, stimulating, releasing tension, stiffness, joint pain, and hardened areas in the muscles often called ‘crystals’, or knots. Silence is always best when giving a massage, no verbal chitchat, or soft gentle music. A warm, comfortable environment on a firm, flat massage table with comfortable positioning for the head, shoulders, and feet is best. Organic pure vegetable oils, and balms are best used sparingly. Short nails, and warm hands are important, plus a calm and quiet manner. The four basic movements of massage are:
Effleurage – even smooth, soothing movements Patris sage – circular, rolling, wringing, picking up movements. Friction – fingertips or thump pads, disperse of knots. Tapotement – tapping, hacking, pounding, and clapping.
Reflexology Zone Therapy Physicians, and healers have used zone therapy in Asia for centuries. For every important muscle, or gland organ in the trunk and head there is a tiny area on one of the hands, feet, ears, and even the tongue that corresponds to it. With the correct type of stimulation and massage work on these areas you can unblock an energy flow that also affect the corresponding area of the body. Primal Therapy ‘Emotional Balance’ The body is a memory bank which holds all of it’s experiences, forgetting nothing, even when the conscious mind is unable to recall these events. The whole body will remember experiences, not just the mind. Mind and body are a unit, the body will react to experiences which have been disconnected, coded, and stored. Any painful, traumatic experiences will be locked into the subconscious mind. The complete balance of the child goes way back to the consciousness of the two people conceiving the child. The state of the health and environment of the mother carrying the child has a further major influence on the child. Following these tow things is the birth process and the early , up to seven years in particular, as these are the really crucial years for the consciousness to be properly formed. Just because a foetus cannot conceptualise the stress does not mean that it is not being hurt by it, or that the stress will not leave a lasting effect on later behavior. New York ontologist, in research papers, has stated that when a sudden noise strikes the ear the heart beats rapidly, pupils dilate, the blood vessels constrict, stomach, esophagus, and intestines, are seized by spasms… You forget the noise but your body never will. Pain from emotional trauma can be felt in our lives, then stored in the body for a lifetime, producing tension as it's symptoms. Effects of painful events stored in the brain eventually produce effects on the growth center in the brain. Stress and tension can interfere with the diurnal rhythm of hormone secretion. The hypothalamus is the central area where feelings become translated into physical realities. It is the transducer of the mind and body. It regulates many vital life systems including core body temperature. It secretes hormones called 'releasing factors'. The job of parents is to help children enjoy life. When children are happy they are well integrated, they will take part in society efficiently and effectively. Let children embrace joyousness, simplicity, and be natural. Nutrition and Food Preparation ersonal sessions, and classes preparing and experiencing wise nutrition according to your blood group and ayurvedic constitution. 'Come forth into the light of things. Let nature be your teacher' - Wordsworth. The body is like a furnace, feed it the correct diet (fuel) and you will have efficiency in your energy and complete running order. The direction you choose is up to you. You and nobody else on this planet is responsible for your happiness. The diet, lifestyle, circumstances, and relationships, as an adult are your choosing. Change is first a state of mind and followed by an action. Let that action be a wise one. As you introduce biogenic (living foods) and bioactive (fresh foods) according to your blood type and ayervedic body type you will notice improvements in how you feel. Remember, the longer the sickness has occurred, the greater the patience will have to be to become well. Learning to listen to what the body tells us we will increase our awareness to what is correct or not. Sit quietly with only pleasant conversation (if any) while eating, and chewing your food thoroughly 25 chews. We do not have teeth in our stomach. Think of the mouthful you are eating rather than what you are about to eat. Pleasant colours around you (especially orange and yellow) increase the digestive juices. Be joyous in preparation and partaking of your meals. Ayerveda The Sanskrit word ‘Ayerveda’. Means the science of life and longevity. Every individual is both a creation of cosmic energies and a unique phenomenon, a unique personality. It is a holistic system of healing in the truest sense. Our consciousness, mind and body is in constant interaction and relationship with other people and the environment. To create our balance of health ‘Ayerveda’ takes into consideration these different levels of life and their interconnection. It is a science, which involves the balance of mind, body, emotional, and spiritual well-being. ‘Ayerveda’ teaches that we all have a constitution, which is our individual psychobiological makeup. From the moment of our conception we have an individual constitution that is created by the universal energies of space, water, air, fire, and earth. Within the combination of these five elements there are three fundamental energies, or ‘dosha’s’. Earth and air constitute ‘Vata’, which is energy of movement. Fire and water constitute ‘Pitta’, the principle of digestion or metabolism, the transfer of matter into energy. The third ‘dosha’, ‘Kapha’ the energy of structure and lubrication, is made up of water and earth.
