About Tania

Tania came to Pilates training through a career in dance. In the mid-1990s, she started Pilates work with Lesley Ackland at London's BodyMaintenance studio. "I was captivated by the mind and body connection that Pilates works on. It speaks to me as a person who invests a lot of energy into feeling and staying well." Tania is certified through New York's PhysicalMind Institute in The Method® Pilates. She returned to Wellington to form Hearts and Bones in 2002. Between 2003 and 2006 she also provided Pilates services for students at the New Zealand School of Dance, Wellington. Tania leads private Pilates workouts from her home studio at 21 Hauraki Street, Karori. Tania also trains Pilates instructors. Until May 2008 Hearts and Bones was a PhysicalMind Institute Certifying Studio. Hearts and Bones also offers Workshops around New Zealand and the wider region that enable all Pilates instructors, regardless of where they trained, to continue broadening their knowledge.

History of Pilates: Joseph Pilates

Joseph Pilates was a performer and a boxer living in England and, at the outbreak of WWI, was placed under forced internment along with other German nationals in Lancaster, England. There he taught fellow camp members the concepts and exercises developed over 20 years of studying yoga, Zen, and ancient Greek and Roman physical regimens before devising the system of original exercises known today as "matwork", or exercises done on the floor. He called this regimen "Contrology." A few years later, he was transferred to another camp, where he began devising equipment to rehabilitate his "patients," taking springs from the beds and rigging them to create spring resistance and "movement" for the bedridden. Joseph and his wife Clara immigrated to New York from Europe in 1926. In the USA Pilates and Clara further developed his method of exercise. Pilates is a method of exercises designed to stretch, strengthen and balance the musculoskeletal system of the body. It focuses on postural alignment, breath control, the integration of abdominal strength with stabilisation of the pelvis, spine and shoulder girdle as well as muscular flexibility and joint mobility. The whole body is trained to work as an orchestrated whole, instead of isolating muscle groups and training them individually.

Testimonials

"I have been attending Hearts and Bones for two years now. I was an "off the street " customer and booked in after seeing the sign in Wellington. The reason I wanted to try Pilates at that stage was that I had had chronic low back pain after badly damaging a low disc 20 years previously. I was managing the pain with anti-inflammatories, but was having difficulty improving my fitness as the pain would increase every time I tried to increase my activity. I had been told that Pilates could be helpful but must admit that I was a bit sceptical in the beginning. I enjoyed my first few sessions with Tania but went home thinking I had not worked hard enough. Results of Pilates have been subtle but real and after a few months I was hooked, off anti-inflammatories, and enjoying activities such as tennis, walking and the gym. I recommend Hearts and Bones to anyone who needs professional, high quality, Pilates delivered in a comfortable friendly environment. I have found it a pleasure going to the studio, and leave "walking on air" every time." M. Dare, Physiotherapist, NZSP, DipMT, Reg Phty Acup, Avalon Physiotherapy, Wellington, 2007. "Dear Tania: I wanted to write and let you know what a wonderful experience I had working with you as my first Pilates instructor. I loved how at my most frustrated point you could so soothingly say just the right thing to keep me engaged. I felt you took the limitations I came to you with and my progress very seriously. I also admired and appreciated your professional demeanour. In ten sessions, I came away feeling like I was stronger than I had been in years. My body felt much more whole and healed. I truly appreciated my first Pilates experience being with YOU!" P. Murphy, Client, Alameda, California 2002. "Tania has trained with me since January 1996 and has achieved considerable expertise as a Pilates teacher. She has taught a wide range of clients including standard fitness, scoliosis, back problem, post- and ante-natal, knee injuries and RSI (OOS). I cannot recommend her strongly enough..." Lesley Ackland, Proprietor, BodyMaintenance studio, London 1997.
