About First Chiropractic
We've been delivering quality chiropractic care to the Napier-area since 1994.
Our approach is simple. We believe that health is among our most valuable possessions. And while we generally meet people after they’ve lost their health, our commitment is two-fold:
1. Relief Care
When many people seek care in our office they have one goal: relief. So that’s where we start! During this initial stage of intensive care, we have several obligations:
- Uncover the underlying cause of the health problem
- Suggest a care plan to produce the fastest results possible
- Offer ways patients can participate in their recovery
- Explain the value of post-symptomatic wellness care
2. Wellness Care
We encourage our patients to achieve the highest levels of health they can. Through educational opportunities (like this website), we hope to communicate the value of ongoing chiropractic care. Our desire is to see our practice members abandon the prevailing sickness care model of health (waiting for symptoms and then taking action), in favor of the emerging wellness model.
You’re the Boss
Regardless of your health goals, please understand that we see ourselves as mere servants. You’re the boss! It’s your body, your health and your future. Our job is to offer you the finest chiropractic care possible, and it’s up to you to decide how much of it you want.

Introducing Napier Chiropractors
Dr. Laurence Gilmore
I first heard about chiropractic when I met a chiropractor in my teens." remembers Dr. Laurence Gilmore. " I went to watch Brian O'Hagan adjusting patients and read the books he gave me and knew that I had found what I wanted to do with my life. It was inspiring to see chiropractic help many people through natural means - it was simple, effective, and made very good sense to me.
Dr. Glimore studied chiropractic at the Phillip Institute School of Chiropractic in Melbourne. The courses included anatomy, human physiology, X-ray, diagnosis, chiropractic adjusting techniques and patient care. After graduating in 1987 he practised in Sydney for one year, then London for three years, before returning to New Zealand and setting up a practice in Wellington. In 1994 he and his family moved to Napier and set up the Kennedy Road Chiropractic Centre. 2007 saw the practice expanding, opening another office in Hastings and changing the name of the practices to First Chiropractic.

Laurence is married to Sarah and they have three children, Luke, India and Cara. They have never been vaccinated and chiropractic is their primary form of health care. (If that sounds interesting be sure to ask Laurence to explain)

Dr. Denise Brown
I grew up on a farm near Taupo. After various office jobs I went to work for a chiropractor as an assistant. I love the chiropractic philosophy and enjoyed seeing many people improve their health so much so that I decided to move to Auckland to train as a Chiropractor.
I have been working at First Chiropractic since May 2002 and love the practice, the people and all Hawkes Bay has to offer.
My other interests include, horse riding, running, gym, Pilate's and relaxing with friends at wineries, movies or the hot pools. I have a horse called Boz and a cat called Frankie, so am kept pretty busy outside practice hours!
Dr. Paul Bushell
I recall ever since my childhood days growing up in Taranaki, I have always wanted to do something with my life to help others. I think having both my parents involved in health care influenced me. I knew from a young age I wanted to become a doctor. At that time, like many people, chiropractic did not cross my mind and I thought I would be involved in medicine. It wasn’t until after I’d finished with school I put more time and thought into my purpose in life, it was then I discovered chiropractic. Scrolling through the New Zealand College of Chiropractic website in 2001 triggered a spark in me that is still burning today. The philosophy, science, and art seemed familiar and resonated with me. It was at that moment I realised that my childhood dream could be realised through chiropractic. I wanted to become a Doctor of Chiropractic.
The following five years of education cemented in my mind that I was in the right place doing what I needed to do. During my fourth year I began seeing the public in the college health centre and I quickly discovered how powerful chiropractic care is to change and improve a person’s health and vitality, naturally.
I moved down from Auckland to Napier earlier in 2008 to join the team at First Chiropractic, and it is very fulfilling to observe the positive changes chiropractic is having on the health of the Hawke’s Bay community.
As for my personal interests, I am a keen surfer, so enjoy jumping in the ocean when I can, I also enjoy watching all sports and appreciating good art and food. Everything considered, living in Napier suits me well.
