Mole Mapping
During your Mole Mapping appointment, the doctor will examine your skin to check for moles. Your skin is also checked using a mole map camera, DermDoc.
There is a distinct difference between a mole and a freckle. A mole is raised to the touch whereas a freckle isn't.
The DermDoc camera is able to magnify specific areas of the skin over 40 times.
There are three main things that the doctor is checking for:1-Irregular shape
2-Dark pigmentation in the mole
3-White/Blue pigmentation in the mole
Moles that are irregular and are of concern are captured and saved on the computer. You will then have a follow up skin check in a years time - unless the above problems are present.
If the Doctor identifies any of these problems, a biopsy would be suggested and the mole would then be sent t the lab for testing.
Removal of the mole can be done at the time of consultation, or a follow-up appointment can be made for removal at a later date.
Before the mole is removed, local anesthetic is injected under the skin to numb the area. The mole is then removed and one or two sutures are inserted.
This is then covered by a waterproof dressing. It is important that the initial dressing stays on the wound for 24 hours and then a normal band aid may be applied.
A follow-up appointment is booked in for the following week to have the sutures removed. At this appointment your biopsy results will also be given to you.
The cost for the initial skin check is from $180.00 (depending on individual)
Mole Removals are from $250.00 per mole removed. (depending on size & location)
