Welcome to Alice Newcomb Meditation Alice is an independent teacher of the Vedic meditation technique offering Introductory Talks & courses of instruction in the technique. The one-hour talk provides a clear insight into the benefits of meditation, the subtleties of the practice and its application in daily life, as well as giving you the opportunity to ask any questions. These talks are free of charge and obligation. The beginners meditation course is offered over four consecutive days with each session lasting approximately 1 ½ hours. In session one you learn the basic mechanics of how to meditate. By the end of the session you know the fundamentals of the technique and are able to practise on your own at home. The benefits of meditation are gained immediately. Over the following three days the technique is checked, refined and knowledge is gained of the effects of meditation on your mind & body, and the development of higher states of consciousness. At the end of the course you will have practical experience combined with theoretical understanding that allows you to be self-sufficient in your practice. The course is conducted in small groups of a maximum of 5 people from Tuesday to Friday evenings, at Seven Senses, 100 West End Road, Westmere. Private courses of instruction are available on request and we will do our best to work around your schedule. Back to top...
The Technique This particular style of meditation is known as the householder technique and is designed for people who have got families, friends, challenging careers and who are fully integrated in society; for people who are totally engaged in life and looking for something to support that lifestyle. The technique is a simple, natural, effortless process practiced for 20 minutes twice a day while sitting comfortably with the eyes closed. During the 20 mins, the active mind settles down naturally to quieter and quieter levels of the thought process until the mind experiences the source of thought – the most settled, yet fully awake state of awareness. As the mind settles, the body follows, and is able to access a state of rest and relaxation that is, in many respects, deeper than the deepest part of deep sleep. This unique state of “restful alertness” eliminates stress, tension and fatigue and is the basis for increased creativity and intelligence, improved health and improved relationships - with yourself, your family and friends, your community and the world you live in. The key to meditation being an effortless process is the use of a suitable mantra and correct instruction. A mantra is a specific sound used as a vehicle for the effortless settling down of the mind to the experience of the source of thought, something we refer to as pure consciousness or bliss consciousness. The mantra has no meaning but is of a very specific sound quality, or resonance, that the mind finds intrinsically charming. When we use this technique the mind moves from the active, thought filled layers to the quieter, more subtle, peaceful layer until it reaches the most subtle level of thought. The mind then naturally lets go of the mantra and will actually move beyond, or transcend thinking, coming to a complete state of rest within itself. When you learn to mediate you will receive your own mantra and then – equally important - you will learn how to use it properly to so that your mind and body effortlessly settle down to this profound state of restful alertness. The practical value of exposing the mind to this quiet state is that the mind comes in contact with the source of all clarity, creativity, energy and intelligence and is then able to bring these qualities forward to be enjoyed throughout the day. The more regularly we access this state, the more readily we are able to bring these qualities into our daily life. Once instructed correctly the technique can be practised anywhere – at home, in your office, on the bus or train on the way to work, on an aeroplane, anywhere! This technique does not require any lifestyle changes, investment of large time commitments and is complimentary to all religions and philosophies. Many who have tried other meditation practices and have not been able to "quieten” their mind, find that this practice does exactly that for them without effort, force or the need to concentrate. The simple and tangible benefits gained from practicing this technique of meditation are enjoyed by millions of people around the world including mums, dads, kids, students, professionals and sports people. The Benefits Meditation allows the body to naturally gain very deep levels of rest, scientifically proven to be up to five times deeper than sleep. In modern day living one of the foremost obstacles to optimum health and happiness is stress. Medical research suggests that up to 90% of all health problems are associated with aggravated levels of stress. When you rest deeply on a daily basis, you create the perfect conditions whereby your body can purify and normalise, throw off stress and fatigue and come back to a state of balance. A rested body and therefore rested mind result in greater clarity of mind, more creative thought process, increased energy levels, greater access to natural intelligence and memory and greater physical health. Think how you feel after a great night's sleep? Some of the benefits of mediation include:
  • Lower levels of, and increased resistance to stress
  • Relief from depression and anxiety
  • Ability to meet life's demands with equanimity and grace
  • Improved relationships
  • Increased levels of energy, creativity and intelligence
  • Relief from insomnia and other sleeping disorders
  • Stronger immune system and improved health
  • Reduction of cholesterol levels
  • Normalisation of blood pressure
  • Reduced risk of heart disease
  • Improved memory and better learning ability
  • Reduced dependency on drugs, alcohol and cigarettes
Additionally, mediation allows us to be the person we want to be. An influence for good - in our own lives with our families and friends, in our professional lives, our communities and also for the world we live in. Back to top...
The Tradition This technique of meditation originated in India over 5,000 years ago. The integrity of the tradition has been passed on through an unbroken line of teachers from that time. The technique and knowledge is specifically designed for “householders”, meaning those who have not chosen to live a reclusive or monastic lifestyle and who remain fully engaged in everyday life. While having its roots in India, the technique is not intrinsically “Indian”; it is universal in its nature and understanding. In much the same way that Einstein’s & Newton’s theories have universal application. The householder technique is sometimes referred to as Vedic Meditation. Vedic means “from the Veda”, and Veda is the ancient record of spiritual experience that is the source of the arts and sciences of Ayurvedic medicine, yoga, meditation and Indian philosophy.
