About Us
At Svastha Yoga New Zealand our aim is to share the benefits to body and mind of the ancient art of Yoga. The word Svastha in Sanskrit literally means “to stay as your self” and refers to the state of complete health and balance in body and mind.
Our approach is based on the teachings of the legendary yogi, Sri T. Krishnamacharya as passed on to us by his long term students A.G. and Indra Mohan (founders of Svastha Yoga and Ayurveda, Chennai, India).
Rather than a 'standardised' style of yoga, this is an inclusive and integrated approach, where each persons individuality and unique requirements are honoured.
In order for each student to receive maximum benefit and enjoyment, we teach smaller classes where the emphasis is on individual attention and postures are adapted to suit individual needs.
All classes - from active and physically challenging to relaxing and restorative - are guided by an underlying set of principles which include:
- Movements synchronised with breath that aid and maintain the health of the spine
- The proper use of breath and its effect on mind and body
- Intelligent sequencing of postures to ensure maximum benefit of the practice (vinyasa krama)
- Maintaining steadiness and comfort within the practice.
- Increasing both strength and flexibility
- Adapting postures to address the specific needs and goals of the individual.
