About Us What is Bowen Therapy? The Bowen Technique was developed in Australia in the 1950's by the late Thomas Bowen (1916 -1982). It was popularized by students of Tom in the eighties, and training in this technique became readily available for the first time in the mid-80.The popularity of Bowen therapy is growing worldwide. Bowen therapy has achieved high status among natural therapies. It has been accepted alongside other modalities that have much longer and established histories, which is indicative of the strength of the technique. How does Bowen work? A Bowen Therapist works on the body’s fascia, recognising that the health of the fascia is vital to the health of the body as a whole. Fascia is the connective tissue in the body often at the centre of chronic pain, illness, injury, re-injury and the limited mobility associated with aging.Bowen therapy works on gently releasing any tension and constriction in the body’s fascia, and in doing so restoring mobility and balance once again. However in gently moving over the fascia, a cascade of other responses also occur influencing circulation, lymphatic drainage, nutrient uptake, and toxin elimination. This integrated body response means that a person’s overall health is positively affected. What to expect? Clients usually lie on a massage table. If this is not possible the client can receive a treatment sitting or standing. The technique involves a series of gentle moves over the body. Bowen moves may be done directly on skin, or through light clothing. There are frequent pauses between moves to allow the body to respond to the work being done. Most injuries and pain respond in 2-4 sessions, but this varies depending on an individual's health and the length of time a person has had a condition. Sessions are held weekly until they are needed less frequently. Maintenance sessions are recommended for optimal health and wellbeing.
