Welcome to Kohu Acupuncture Chinese Acupuncture
Chinese Medicine & Our Practice Philosophy Chinese Medicine is a very ancient practice developed over many centuries by the Chinese. It includes the use of Acupuncture, massage techniques including Tui Na, Guasha, Reflexology, the use of Chinese Herbal Medicine, and meditative breathing techniques including Tai Chi and Qi Gong. Cupping therapy, Electroacupuncture & Moxibustion are other commonly used techniques in our clinic. Our clinic has been designed to incorporate key aspects of chinese medicine such as enabling those receiving treatment to be as close as possible to the natural environment. We are fortunate to be located in the foothills of the beautiful Waitakere Ranges, Auckland's rainforest and water catchment area. This area is very close to the city, but still retains as much of the natural beauty of Auckland as is possible in a major urban city of over 1.4 million inhabitants. Clients are able to view the Waitemata Harbour, the profiles of a dozen volcanos, many species of native birds and insects. Naturally one will also feel, hear & observe the amazing spectrum of weather Aucklanders experience within a day. Kohu Acupuncture's philosophy incorporates the idea that time is one of the most precious things a practitioner can give a client, therefore the minimum duration allowed for treatment is 1 hour. Initial consultations (including treatment) may require 1.5 hours, but more commonly are able to completed in 1 hour. The way we enable this to happen is by e mailing out information and history forms to you to complete prior to the first appointment. This process keeps time taken completing forms to a minimum, reducing fees, keeping treatment costs to an affordable level for many clients. New clients contact Rose directly allowing for any questions to be answered by a qualified practitioner and advice given on treatments. We also firmly believe in the idea that knowledge is power and healthcare practice should be based on the philosophical basis of Te Tiriti O Waitangi - Partnership. Client and Practitoner need to work together to achieve the best possible result. Education is integrated throughout the treatment process and Rose encourages as many clients as possible to learn acupressure skills to use during pregnancy, labour and in the post birth period. This assists in keeping clients as healthy as possible and recover quickly from this life-changing event. Lifestyle adjustments, nutritional considerations and self care can not be carried out by any one other than the client. Resources such as Hypnobirthing book and CD are available on loan to Kohu Acupuncture clients at no additional charge, as are moxa sticks & instructions. Obstetric TENs machine is available for hire at a minimal charge to Kohu Acupuncture clients also. We have a range of pregnancy and parenting resources available to clients. Natural materials and colours reflecting the 5 elements have been consciously integrated into the decor of the clinic. Clients are encouraged to relax during treatments. Ideally, appointments are scheduled to allow clients to rest following a treatment in order to maximise the benefits. A range of music is available upon request during acupuncture treament. Children, babies and whanau/family are welcome at the clinic. Breastfeeding (BF) mothers are supported and additional time is allowed for during treatment if BF women bring their babies with them. Many clients prefer to come for treatment without young children as they feel the benefits of treatment are greater when they relax without children present. Other clients relax more when their babies are with them. Individual requirements are met if at all possible.
How does Chinese Medicine work? Chinese Medicine is based on the very ancient philosophical understandings of Daoism. Many westerners are familiar with the idea of Yin and Yang and the symbol which it represents - the two parts of the whole. The universe and everything within it including function and form are either predominantly yin or yang in nature. Yin transforms into yang and vice versa just as day becomes night and night returns to day. On a smaller scale, the human body and spirit/soul is both yin and yang in nature and function also. The body is a smaller ecosystem within the universe and reflects the Wu Xing or 5 Elements - the flow of qi through the body follows the flow of energy in the wider environment. The quilt (above) is based on an ancient diagramatic representation of the 5 elements described in Chinese Medicine, with the centre representing the Earth (Late Summer / Spleen / Yellow). The other four elements - Water (Winter / Kidney / Black), Wood (Spring / Liver / Green), Metal (Autumn / Lung / White) and Fire (Summer / Heart / Red) surround the centre. Illness or disease occurs when the flow of qi does not occur smoothly or in the direction it should flow naturally. Problems occur if an element becomes too deficient or too strong and the elements before or following it are unable to control or promote it. Problems can become evident if the vital energy or Qi becomes deficient or depleted.
Testimonials "I began seeing Rose nearly five years ago when I was in the late stages of pregnancy with my first baby (my little girl was transverse). Rose is extremely good at locating and identifying the exact pressure points and my body automatically responds. My baby actually turned during a session with Rose. Wanting to get pregnant with my second child quickly, Rose helped get my system back on track and my periods started again within one month of my treatment and I was pregnant two months later. I have continued to see Rose after my second child and she has helped with a number of issues including weight loss, a lack of energy and feeling tired all the time and back problems from carrying the kids. We have since moved to Muriwai and I will make the long trip to see Rose because I trust her completely. Rose is an amazing, supportive and compassionate lady and I am very grateful for all she has done for me." Shona "I am delighted to recommend Rose Vos. In August 2007 Rose was recommended to me by a friend. I had been experiencing lower back pain and very heavy periods, was generally tired and was looking for some relief. I also secretly wanted another baby, but at 39 with one ovary I was unsure whether this would be a realistic goal. I found Rose to be practical and gentle. She creates a very relaxed environment and in my case resolved a long standing back issue which I can happily report has not resurfaced. Rose is wonderfully optimistic and supportive, so when my menstrual periods got lighter and regular she referred me to get herbal medication, and I continued acupuncture with her. To my absolute delight I became pregnant in November and William was born on the 8/8/08 naturally with no problems. I can unreservedly recommend Rose as the help I received before pregnancy, with morning sickness, particularly when my baby was sitting in a posterior position was greatly appreciated." Lucille Quinn "Without Rose's help I would have needed knee surgery. She has also helped with my back problems. It is a pleasure to receive the needles from Rose, as she is caring, compassionate and very friendly. You feel relaxed and at ease from the first meeting." Carole "Rose is the only person I trust with a needle. I have had seven sessions with her and she has fixed problems that I never thought possible to fix. Thank you!" Rebecca Commissaris "I have been a patient of Rose for many months now. I began having acupuncture treatment from her for neck and back pain. I have noticed a vast improvement and the acupuncture has proven to be extremely beneficial for my health and welllbeing. Rose makes everything so comfortable and inviting, you don't want to leave. Many thanks Rose." Annette Hunter "I received acupuncture throughout my last pregnancy, carrying twins. I am convinced that my healthy pregnancy was almost entirely due to the treatment. My babies were born at 38 weeks, with no complications. I only wish I'd discovered acupuncture years ago!!! Rose is a very special and talented lady!" Berni Stanko "I personally have been receiving acupuncture from Rose for many years now. It has been particularly helpful post birth, creating balance within myself and regulating hormonal cycles. Also, I use Rose to assist me to recover from various sporting strains and sprains. I highly recommend Rose to all my clients especially to assist Pregnancy, promote labour and recover and restore balance after birth. Thanks Rose." Cathy McCormick
