Traditionally naturopathy is a system of healing that empowers individuals’ to achieve and maintain optimum health using natural, non-toxic means. Part of this involves the provision of information and tools to make healthy lifestyle and dietary choices. A naturopathic practitioner will also recommend treatments that will help to facilitate healing processes in the body such as detoxification or rejuvenation of tissues. Today naturopathic practice is also used to help in the management of complex chronic diseases such as autoimmune diseases and cancers, and improve the quality of life for these patients. Much of modern naturopathic practice is validated by scientific research published in reputable medical journals around the world, and by clinical observation. This includes studies on many herbs, diet, lifestyle, and nutritional supplements. Herbal medicine has been practiced in many cultures for hundreds if not thousands of years. Indeed many modern pharmaceutical drugs are analogues of chemicals found in plants; aspirin and digoxin are 2 examples. Plants are absolutely fascinating as medicines because they have a whole host of chemicals that work together. When one chemical enhances the effect of another, this is called synergism. This wide array of chemicals in plants also means that plant extract have multiple therapeutic actions. For example some of the actions of Korean ginseng are: it modulates the immune system, is a cardiotonic, enhances cognitive function, and nourishes the tissues. Plants also have powerful energetic actions which are noted in many systems of a traditional medicine including Ayurveda from India and Chinese. A simple example is heating and cooling effects of plants. If a person feels the cold then an herbalist generally needs to prescribe herbs that are warming / heating in nature such as ginger. Combining an understanding of the energetic and chemical nature of plants provides a powerful medicinal tool, increases the beneficial effects and reduces the potential for adverse side effects.
