Have you ever been asked if you are a mouth breather or a nose breather?

Find out more about Buteyko Breathing, Myofunctional Therapy, and Thumb-sucking. Myofunctional Therapy Improve mouth posture and see amazing life-changing benefits Poor mouth and tongue habits may be upsetting your body's delicate balance – after all, your mouth is the gatekeeper to your body and as such, can influence your general health and wellbeing. Furthermore, jaw issues, which can develop as a result of incorrect posture, can cause chronic headache and neck issues due to the jaw's proximity to the upper head and neck. Myofunctional Therapy may help with the following health issues:
  • Headaches and neck pain
  • Allergies
  • TMJ (Temporomandibular joint) problems
  • Thumb sucking
  • Nail or lip biting
  • Speech issues
  • Bloating
  • Food texture sensitivities
  • Choking, gagging or swallowing difficulties
  • Sleep apnea
  • Snoring
  • Long Face syndrome
Poor orofacial function may be the result of noxious habits that could include thumb or digit sucking, tongue-thrust swallow, mouth breathing, chronic nasal congestion or may be the result of physiological or developmental abnormalities. Surgery is sometimes an option however Mouth Matters prefer to focus on developing positive facial and mouth habits as a first priority.
Thumb-sucking Most children will stop sucking thumbs or fingers by themselves around about two to three years of age. However some children continue on with the habit which then has a negative impact on tooth development, not to mention the ongoing embarrassment of being teased at home or school for being a thumb sucker. Mouth Matters take a proactive approach to thumb sucking with a fun, step by step programme that has a very high success rate. Our success rate is due in part to the impact of a third party professional which often carries more weight with the child. In addition to the third-party effect, our programme is the result of years of research both here in New Zealand, and overseas. Our programme is run over 12 weeks, starting with an initial consultation and then six further appointments. We may also wish to call your child to encourage him/her along the way. Has your child developed mouth habits such as thumb sucking, tongue or cheek sucking, or tongue thrust? These habits can not only have detrimental health effects now, but also adversely affect your child's teeth and jaw development leading to costly dental work in the future. Mouth Matters have a solution to assist you with resolving these habits in a positive way. Call us on today to find out more or reach us through the 'Make an Enquiry' form.
