What is psychotherapy? Psychotherapy refers to a wide variety of ways in which psychotherapists work with people to help them understand the things that are troubling them and develop news ways of dealing with these issues. Freud wrote that "love and work are the cornerstones to our humanness." Developing more satisfying, meaningful ways of living, working, playing and relating is at the heart of our work. We use a variety of mainly psychodynamic approaches to work with you collaboratively on whatever you are finding difficult in your life. This can include identifying patterns that may repeat in your life which may contribute to these difficulties. Together we can develop new understandings and strategies to help you break free from old patterns that may have been useful and necessary in the past but are no longer helpful. Whatever is troubling you, our aim is to help you to live more creatively and fully. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is based on the principle that from our earliest years we have developed ways of dealing with emotional pain and distress such as fear, anger, grief and anxiety. Exploration with your therapist can help deepen your insight and self-awareness and over time allows you to make more conscious choices. This is the basis of lasting transformation and change in life, work and relationships. Do you need psychotherapy? People often come to therapy when they are experiencing difficulties or problems in their lives that they don't understand and can't resolve. Perhaps you may be feeling stuck in a situation that you feel you can't control or escape. Or maybe you feel sad but don't really know why. Perhaps you are struggling with a loss. Or maybe you are experiencing difficulties in one of the areas listed here. What happens in a psychotherapy session? One on one psychotherapy sessions are 50 minutes long. We offer a non-judgemental, safe space to fully explore your needs and personal hopes and goals. We are committed to really listen to you and to work at fully understanding your experience of the issues bringing you to psychotherapy. We do not offer you advice or quick fixes. Instead, we work with you to develop understanding that leads to lasting change. About Me I offer short and long term counselling and psychotherapy to individuals and couples. I provide a space to talk and explore your experiences and concerns in a safe and confidential manner. My aim is to assist people to work through emotional difficulties, improve relationships and develop positive change. Experience Several years experience working in mental health, alongside people with long standing mental illness and addictions within specialist treatment rehabilitation services. I have also spent time working with students at a tertiary institute and other community agencies. In addition to my private practice, I do part time work for Lifeline New Zealand. Special Interests I work with a broad range of issues, with both individuals and couples. I specialise in relationship issues, depression, anxiety, stress, addictions, identity issues, men’s issues and religious and spiritual issues. Approach I work from a psychodynamic psychotherapy base. I also utilise Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and draw on theories of development and attachment. I believe effective psychotherapy needs to be tailored to the individual and address all sources of health. Professional Memberships I am a registered Psychotherapist (PBANZ) provisional scope and member of the New Zealand Association of Psychotherapists Northern Branch (NZAP). Fees For individuals $90.00. For couples $120. Fees are negotiable for those who are unwaged or low on income. WINZ funding may be available. Please see links page for more information on obtaining WINZ funding.
