ABOUT - CAROLYN RUSSELL Carama is the sharing of one girl on a journey offering inspiration, resources, teaching and a presence of unconditional love to support others looking to make sustainable changes toward happier and healthier lives. Mindfulness meditation, yoga and body work therapy are all part of the service. Carama is part of a network within a community of like minds with a vision for a life of empowered, harmonious and authentic living. Behind the vision is Carolyn Russell. Young, vibrant and talented she exudes vitality and joy. Carolyn combines her love of dialogue, multi-sensory perceptual skills and proficient listening to skilfully create a safe and profound place for unraveling, releasing blocks and enabling people to realize their potential. She has naturally found herself providing this space for people from when she can remember. In fact, before she really understood the gifts she had, her capacity to attract it where ever she went became a running joke between her friends. Carolyn grew up in Taupo. Her unique experience began in High School where she found herself spending her recreation time teaching piano, coaching gymnastics and rowing and working at the local supermarket. She left Taupo to study medicine and after completing the first year at Auckland University ended up joining the Royal New Zealand Air Force where she worked as a medic for a little over three years. Personal adversity led her to question the reality she was living which acted as the catalyst for profound transformation. Her journey into self actualization began in 2011 and led her to the Super Hero Training programme which guides people to find their purpose and as such a more aware and functional way of being in the world. She discovered a natural gift to guide others in a similar way to create visions and then set about implementing them using a less conventional approach and mindful practice. At the end of 2012 she completed the programme and returned to New Zealand after a world wide travelling adventure. Over that time she had implemented a consistent yoga and mediation practice and discovered a lot which she was very keen to share with her friends and family. She began to do this through the facilitation of community meditation groups. In 2014 Carolyn took her yoga practice to the next level and certified as teacher in both a vinyasa flow style through the Pranashama Institute based in Florida and also became one of the first certified Acroyoga teachers in New Zealand. Carolyn compliments her vast experience with training in Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy at the Neo Touch Clinic and Institute in Auckland. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology (Health). The two qualifications integrate beautifully to form a novel approach which addresses both the body and the mind concurrently. Carolyn is a registered practitioner with the International Institute of Complimentary Therapists and Yoga Alliance Registered Teacher.
YOGA Yoga is Union. It is a practice to facilitate the alignment of mind, body and soul. It brings balance, happiness, peace and clarity. Yoga helps us to unravel the mysteries of our stories, the mysteries of life. Yoga is a beautiful practice to incorporate into any lifestyle at any stage and it is a particularly useful addition to an already existing exercise regime. When the mind is working in alignment with your body it is incredible how much more you can actually achieve. Yoga helps you discover newness and to reach new heights or depths. Yoga is not only an individual practice. It is the perfect tool to help break down invisible barriers that exist between people. It acts as a vehicle to facilitate connection, love and harmony. It enhances community bringing people together with a common purpose. Carolyn is an avid yogi who teaches vinyasa, yin and acroyoga from the Raw Yoga studio in Milford, Auckland.
ACROYOGA Acroyoga is an incredible community focused practice founded by Jenny Sauer-Klein and Jason Nemer in America in 2003. It consists of three main components – a solar acrobatic practice which is the more physical, strength building component, a lunar therapeutic practice which is the softer, healing aspect and the explicit yoga practices involving balance, union and breath awareness. Carolyn teaches with Nicole Moyes, founder of Raw Yoga, Milford. Synchronistically they both discovered the practice at the 2013 International Yoga Festival at Kawai Pura Pura in Auckland and both knew in the same moment that they would go on to teach this beautiful practice. The outrageous thing is that while they both had the same realization, at the time, the didn’t actually know each other! The completed certification together in San Diego in September 2014 and now share a regular class with the community on a Wednesday evening and hold an acroyoga jam every Sunday afternoon. We uphold the acroyoga philosophy and approach emphasising safe, playful practices. An acroyoga class is facilitated and includes an introductory circle, asana warm-up and acro sequence. It is an all levels class and any level of experience is welcome. Each class is catered to the level of experience of the students present. Wednesday 1900, Raw Yoga Studio, 151 Kitchener Road, Milford. Investment is $25 and is part of the regular Raw Yoga schedule. The acroyoga jam is an opportunity for us to come together to explore the practice freestyle and to share our experience with each other. The space is not facilitated and as such the teachers have the opportunity to play too. We often finish with thai massage together. Any level of experience welcome. Sunday 1400-1600, Raw Yoga Studio, 151 Kitchener Road, Milford. Donation is invited to cover cost of facilities.
MINDFULNESS MEDITATION Meditation is a tool to still the mind, to cultivate inner peace and to experience the dynamic flow of creation. It is incredibly useful in reducing stress, enhancing health and finding a more resilient way to navigate the modern world. Many scientific studies are now emerging validating this theory and individual experience. Through enormous exploration, various retreats, trainings and lots of reading Carolyn has crafted a blend which uses breath awareness, body sensation observation and the environmental sounds as an anchor point to ground in the moment and move beyond the thoughts of the mind. It is in the space between the thoughts that truth is found. Carolyn is here to offer various suggestions to support you on your own journey of discovery, after all there is no ‘one way’ that works for everyone. Carolyn’s focus is on how we can take what is learned through seated or dynamic meditation and apply to in our everyday lives to move beyond the reaction states that consume our energy and have detrimental effects on our health and wellness. Group Mindfulness Meditation – Enjoy meeting like-minded people and experiencing a live facilitated mindfulness practice. Personal Mindfulness Meditation – Experience focused attention and a personalised experience catered to your specific needs.
CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY At Carama I am on the journey with you and and bring that non-judgmental quality to each and every one of my client interactions. Living mindfully enables me to turn up to each client with a clarity of presence and an orientation toward health. I understand that different things work for different people and everyone has their own understanding of what wellness means for them. With an array of tools there is much to draw on to find those most appropriate to facilitate you in the discovery of your own definitions, practices and meaning. Most importantly I acknowledge three fundamental components for sustainable change:
    1. Complete acceptance of what is without judgement 2. Persistence 3. Patience
What is it? Craniosacral therapy is a gentle touch technique designed to alleviate tension in the body, calm the nervous system, release blockages and increase vitality. The nervous system of the body is a vital part of healthy functioning. It drives the immune response and neurological functioning required for healthy brain activity, sensation and movement. The nervous system uses a fluid called Cerebro Spinal Fluid (CSF) for both protection and functioning. Craniosacral therapy works by connecting directly with the system and noticing its subtleties in order to release tension, regenerate optimal action and enable a client to find a greater sense of well-being. What to expect? Treatment begins with brief history to provide the practitioner with an understanding of your well-being and what you are looking to resolve. The client then moves to the table, fully clothed, to get comfortable and settle in to the treatment. The practitioner creates a present moment connection with the body and is guided as to the appropriate hand positioning for the specific needs of the client. Hand positions change as the treatment proceeds and different areas of tension to be released are highlighted through the body. Throughout the treatment a client could expect to experience a variety of sensations including tingling, hot/cold flushes, pressure and release. More often than not the client experiences a deep sense of relaxation which can invoke sleep. What does it treat? Craniosacral Therapy is effective for treating an array of ailments including:
  • Tension Headaches
  • Lower back pain
  • Musculoskeletal Pain
  • Digestion complaints
  • Trauma
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
Consultations are between 45-60 minutes. Investment : $80 per treatment Payment is due at the end of the treatment. No particular result can be guaranteed and no refunds are offered. CANCELLATION POLICY: A minimum of 24 hours notice is required for changes or cancelled appointments. A 50% charge applies for appointments cancelled within 24 hours of the scheduled time.
