SERVICES

About Me - Shelley Bickerton Auckland Based Massage Therapist, Pilates Instructor, Dry-Needler I completed my Health Sciences Diploma in Therapeutic Massage in 2008 and since then have been working in a Sports Massage Clinic. I have trained in Sports Massage and have worked closely with physiotherapists with my training and massaging. I became a Pilates instructor in 2010 and teach one-to-one Pilates and a variety of Pilates classes. In 2011 I completed a pain management course and now use dry-needling as one of my many techniques for releasing muscles. I am passionate about massage, Pilates and dry needling and the incredible results I get for my clients with all of these modalities. No matter your age I can help you be fitter, stronger, more flexible and healthier.
Massage sports, remedial, therapeutic. relaxation, nmt, tmj (jaw), facial (accupressure and massage), head, feet, hands Sports/remedial massage is tailored to treat the needs of athletes (amatuer through to elite) It is designed to achieve specific goals, such as increasing performance, treating or preventing injury such as strains, sprains, tendonitis and adhesions. It can also be used in conjunction with training schedules to enhance performance, aid in recovery and reduce the potential for injuries. The major applications of sports massage are recovery, remedial (to improve a debilitating condition), maintenance, and event (pre, inter, and post). Healthy, injury-free muscles perform better, longer, and with less chance of injury. Effects of Sports Massage
  • Improved fluid circulation (blood, lymph)
  • Muscular/Overall Body and Mind relaxation
  • Muscle/Fascia/Connective tissue release to areas of tension, adhesions
  • Deactivation of trigger points. (A trigger point is a nodule of tight muscle tissue that can refer pain locally or to other areas of the body)
  • Greater energy
  • Greater flexibility and range of motion
  • More fluid movement patterns
  • Faster recovery
  • Pain reduction.

KIDS-TEENAGERS Massage and Pilates I do have lots of experience with treating our younger population :) I recommend smaller sessions 30-45 mins for both massage and pilates sessions. When you have an active child they also need their muscles regularly flushed and looked after. Pilates is great for younger bodies for their flexibility and strength and is supportive exercise for kids training in other sports.
Pregnancy Massage & Pilates Pregnancy massage shares many of the goals of regular massage – to relax tense muscles, ease sore spots, improve circulation and mobility and make you feel good. Benefits of prenatal massage:
  • Reduced back pain
  • Reduced joint/nerve pain
  • Edema or swelling of the joints during pregnancy, is often caused by reduced circulation and increased pressure on the major blood vessels by the heavy uterus. Massage helps to stimulate soft tissues to reduce collection of fluids in swollen joints, which also improves the removal of tissue waste, carried by the body’s lymph system.
  • Reduced muscle tension and headaches
  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Improved oxygenation of soft tissues and muscles
  • Better sleep
Pilates exercise during pregnancy is very useful in helping to maintain your strength, flexibility, tone and improve upon your posture. Exercise should be with the permission of your physician/midwife and the exercise program will need to be constantly modified to allow for the your hormonal and body changes. Benefits include:
  • Reduced backaches, constipation, bloating and swelling
  • Increases your energy
  • Promotes muscle tone, strength and endurance
  • Can improve sleep patterns
  • Improves posture
  • Increased fitness may help you to cope with labour
  • Helpful in recovery post-birth
  • Relaxation and breathing control

Dry Needling Dry needling seeks to relieve the pain caused by musculoskeletal dysfunction through relaxing muscle trigger points, these are taut bands that develop within a muscle that can occur in cases of both acute and chronic pain. Trigger points may develop in a muscle as a result of stresses such as poor posture, repetitive actions, or emotional trauma, and can refer pain and create dysfunction in other parts of the body, including severe headaches. Dry needling may be the answer to help you! The process of dry needling involves an accupuncture needle being gently inserted into the painful part of the muscle (the trigger point) so as to relax or release it, with the aim of permanently reducing the associated pain and discomfort and restoring the imbalances caused by the muscle feeling taut and contracted. It is helpful for back and neck pain; hamstring problems; headaches; muscular tightness; and sporting injuries. Get in touch with Shelley Bickerton today if you have any questions around how dry needling could help you.
Pilates Pilates exercises are designed to increase muscle strength, endurance, as well as flexibility and to improve posture and balance which helps greatly if you are training for your sport. Pilates improves flexibility, abdominal and lumbo-pelvic stability and muscular activity. You will get to know your own body really well and what you need to do to balance out postural imbalances.
