Welcome to Arcadian Homeopathy Why would you choose homeopathy for your animal? Classical homeopathy is a healing system, which is safe, inexpensive and yet can be highly effective. It can be used for virtually any condition which could be treated medically. Barbara's homeopathy has helped with problems ranging from a damaged rabbit's eye to a hoof infection in a horse. If your dog has a skin condition, homeopathy could help. If your cat has chronic respiratory problems, homeopathy could help. Whatever animal health problem you are struggling with, give Barbara a call or an email today and find out if she can help with it. ................................................................................ What happens in a Homeopathic Consultation? When you first bring your animal to Barbara she will take up to an hour to collect the details of the case. This is because homeopaths need to know a great deal of information, which you may feel is irrelevant if you have not been exposed to homeopathy before. She will want to know what the animal is scared of, whether it prefers warmth or cold, what position it lies in, and other detailed questions which appear to have nothing to do with the presenting condition. This is to obtain a holistic view of your pet's case in order to select the preparation that fits its unique presentation the best. ................................................................................ What happens after the consultation? For a chronic case, it is likely that Barbara will not prescribe for your animal immediately. She will take time to select the best homeopathic preparation and will generally post it out to you within a few days. Simpler case may receive their preparation immediately. The preparations are dispensed either as tablets or drops. Tablets are best crushed between two spoons and either placed directly into your animal's mouth, or placed on a small amount of food. Drops may be put straight onto your animal's gums, but may be better diluted in a teaspoon of water first. Often the preparation needs to be repeated regularly, but in some cases a single dose is sufficient to stimulate your animal's healing response. After you have administered the preparations, responses vary considerably. In case of long standing illness, you will most likely observe slow but steady improvement, whereas a young animal with a complaint that occurred very suddenly is likely to improve rapidly. Sometimes a transient aggravation of symptoms may occur. This generally indicates that your pet's healing response has begun, and improvement should follow. ................................................................................ Follow up Care Acute cases may need daily re-evaluation. Chronic cases however tend to respond more slowly and follow-up appointments are generally required after a month. Barbara will encourage you to telephone or email after a shorter time, maybe a week or two depending on the condition, for a progress report. Ailments that have been present a long time take a long time to resolve, so a few visits may be necessary to monitor and maintain progress. If any concerns arise, it is important for you to contact her.

................................................................................ So what is homeopathy? Classical homeopathy is a system of medicine introduced by Samuel Hahnemann (1755 - 1843). He was a doctor who was disenchanted with the medical practices of his day, which involved such harmful treatments as bloodletting, and dosing with poisonous metals. He discovered that when a healthy person took a medicine, it would generate in them some very clear symptoms. If a sick person displaying those particular symptoms then took that medicine, they would find marked improvement. Later he discovered that his medicines worked even better when carefully diluted. Today homeopathy employs a wide range of substances as medicines. These range from plant and animal material to metals and minerals. Each substance used has a carefully recorded range of symptoms that it is known to cause in healthy, and therefore to treat in an unwell individual. This system of medicine is unique in that there historically was no animal testing! (More recently some animal trials have been conducted, mainly to demonstrate the efficacy of the treatment. Practically all of the remedies now in use have been experimented with extensively on humans, who can of course state how the remedy is affecting them – much more accurate than observations of an animal). When homeopathy is applied to animals like your own, you can rest assured that it has been thoroughly tested on willing human volunteers! In selecting the appropriate remedy, the whole patient is taken into account, not only the symptoms of the main complaint, but also the symptoms of any other ailments which are present, general activity levels, thirst, personality, etc. Of particular value for choosing the correct remedy are any factors (including temperature, time of day, season, activity, etc) which improve or worsen the patient’s symptoms. For example, if your dog has a skin condition which is .much worse whenever you wash him in nice warm water, but improves immediately on swimming in the sea, then the selection of the particular preparation which will help him becomes much more precise. If you cannot think of anything which either worsens or improves the condition then Barbara will still be able to work with your animal, but it may be a matter of trying several possibilities before finding the one that does best.
Barbara’s background Barbara graduated as a veterinarian in 1982 and worked in small animal practice full-time until her first daughter was born in 1989. Having successfully used homeopathy to treat her children’s ailments, she decided to combine her veterinary experience with proficiency in homeopathy. She graduated from the Bay of Plenty College of Homeopathy in 2002 with a Diploma in Homeopathy (Animal Health) and has been working with homeopathy for animals ever since. Her animal family include an Australian shepherd dog, two black cats and several hens of assorted breeds, as Barbara has an interest in poultry, and also offers courses on the basic care of chickens, for backyard enthusiasts. ................................................................................ Testimonial When my Siamese cat Athena (aged 13yrs) began to suffer from colon problems, my background as a vet-nurse and my love of natural medicines, drove me to look for an alternative to tedious weekly visits to the vet, as this was offering no hope of a recovery and Athena's future was looking bleak. I was determined to find a vet who would understand Athena's medical problems and treat her homeopathically....thankfully, I found Dr Barbara Stumbles. With her experience and dedication to animal health, Dr Barb very quickly prescribed a homeopathic remedy which started to work straight away. As I live in rural northland, we had weekly phone calls or progress reports by email and after just three months, Athena is now healthy and happy again. We just can't thank Dr Barb enough and highly recommend her... she really cares and sure knows her stuff !!!" -- Becky Friend
