Welcome Yoga on the Square was established in 2005 by Jyoteeka Cummings. It is based at Westside Chambers in the Square of Palmerston North. There are classes for beginners through to experienced students. Private sessions are available on request. Jyoteeka is the principal teacher. She has trained in the Iyengar style with Peter Scott from Melbourne. She has also travelled to Pune, India to study with the Iyengar family. At Yoga on the Square, the poses are taught in the tradition of the Iyengar system. They are done dynamically so as to make the body strong and supple. Instruction is given on how to align and fine tune the postures as this brings more energy into the body, as well as bringing focus to the mind. The poses, when done correctly, have various physical and psychological effects, improving health and maintaining an overall sense of well being. Yoga is a process of self-transformation. The mind is engaged to develop awareness of and transform one's physical and mental state. The body, in the form of various postures (or asanas), is used as a tool to achieve this. Please note, you don't have to be flexible to do yoga! You just need to have an open mind and a willingness to learn. Choose a course or class to suit your needs. Make every effort to attend regularly. Improvements will naturally follow. Class Description
IntroductoryFor first timers or those new to Iyengar yoga classes in Palmerston North. These classes are designed to provide a platform for regular attendance at the school. The basic principles of Iyengar yoga are introduced through work on foundation poses. Attendance is required only once a week , however twice a week is highly recommended.
Level 1For those who have reached proficiency in Introductory. All the basic poses are explored along with regular practice of Sarvangasana (shoulderstand) and an introduction to Sirsasana (head stand)
Level 2This class is for those who want to work a little stronger. You don't have to be flexible but you do have to want to attempt headstands and shoulder stands. More challenging poses are introduced along with longer timings in inversions.
GeneralOpen to all. These are mixed level classes, however assumed knowledge of foundation poses is required. They may be attended on a casual basis.

Workshops and Upcoming Events 10 Week Introductory Course This course is an opportunity to learn the basic yoga poses, taking time to understand alignment and build on strength and flexibility. Melodie is a Senior Iyengar teacher with 20 years of teaching experience. She has made many trips to India to study with the Iyengar family. When: 9th, 10th and 11th May 2008. These workshops will focus on how to sequence your practice and include a menstrual or restorative practice. Cost $25.
