Meditation for Fertility

Issues of Infertility

Fertility problems have slowly been on the rise for the last 25 years, with up to 25 per cent of couples experiencing difficulties in conceiving. Causes include:

  • Ovulatory failure (including Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) 20%
  • Tubal damage 15%
  • Endometriosis 5%
  • Male problems (including low sperm count) 26%
  • Unexplained 34%

As a result, more and more couples are seeking expensive medical assistance in order to conceive. Science is however unable to efficiently treat the “unexplained” cases where there is obviously a deeper problem at hand. This is where natural approaches such as meditation may be useful. Read on for more information.

What is Meditation?

Meditation is a mind-body practice that employs various techniques to focus an individual’s attention on a word, action or object in order to quieten the mind for incessant streams of though. This increases feelings of calmness, physical relaxation, psychological balance and overall well being.

There is good scientific evidence coming to light that our bodies respond to the way we think, feel and act, and in this respect meditation can be a powerful healing tool. When practiced daily, it strengthens the mind and body connection resulting in improved overall health. Using techniques such as breath work, visualizations or positive affirmations (implying ones ability to get pregnant), the mind is brought back to the present moment and relieved of any stress surrounding the infertility issue.

Meditation for Fertility

Both stress hormones and mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety have been linked by science to infertility problems. They may do so by:

  • Impacting the Hypothalamus gland, also responsible for he production of reproduction hormones
  • Elevating cortisol levels which may limit, deregulate or inhibit menstruation
  • Triggering miscarriages

Meditation serves to reduce stress by inhibiting sympathetic nervous system activity (responsible for the ‘fight or flight’ response), and by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system activity (which has a calming affect on the body). When your body is in this ideal, relaxed state, the immune system function and general health is improved allowing for a natural conception to take place.

Meditation and Positive Attitude

Meditation (when practiced regularly) positively transforms ones state of mind and attitude towards life at large. When facing infertility problems, a positive attitude is the number one weapon in reducing your stress levels and to help you get pregnant. Positive affirmations may also be introduced in the meditation to train the subconscious into thinking you are pregnant, which in turn increases the chances of an actual pregnancy manifesting in the body. Trying to always take a positive point of view on setbacks is also important. Rather than looking at your infertility as a failure, you could take the positive stance that it was just another step in your pregnancy journey.
